Hello all,

I was recently introduced to this community and am grateful to be allowed to post the following:

Stakeholders at the University of Exeter, the British Library, and the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University are drafting a project proposal to build a concordance between twentieth century archaeological surveys of Syria that will be achieved through working directly with Syrian scholars. This multi-year project is reaching out to the MELA community to see if an experienced cataloger would like to join the grant-funded project. We are interested in building the project around inclusive, ethical cataloging with local relevance. We seek someone with fluency in Arabic, knowledge of standardized placenames of the region (Syria) and the challenges of transliteration, as well as the relevant authorities and standards. The project will require instructing groups in archival description and metadata practices and will result in a digital platform enabling searching across collections in multiple languages.

We are still in the process of drafting the funding proposal and can therefore adapt the opportunity to suit most working schedules but will most likely be holding in-person meetings outside of academic terms (including one at Exeter and one in Southern Turkey) and limiting virtual meetings during the academic year.  Please reach out to Julia Gearhart (gear...@princeton.edu) if you would like to express your interest and to learn more about the project.
