Subject: [PCCLIST] South Asia SACO Funnel

Hello,

We are writing to announce the formation of a new SACO funnel focused on South Asia. We invite interested catalogers, subject librarians, and scholars interested in the region to join our Google Groups mailing list. The list will be used to schedule meetings, host discussions on relevant topics, and submit suggestions and questions on LCSH related to South Asia. For questions, or if you wish to join the funnel, please contact funnel coordinators, Jonathan Durr (jonath...@wisc.edu) or Gautham Reddy (gmr...@emory.edu).

Please see our mission statement below:

The South Asia Funnel (SAF) enables catalogers, subject librarians, scholars, and community stakeholders to submit proposals for changes and additions to Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) related to South Asian Studies. SAF was formed in Spring 2023 and falls under the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO).

SAF mission is to develop a framework for reviewing and proposing changes to outdated, inaccurate, and harmful LCSH South Asia terminology. The project also facilitates cooperation around proposing new terminology dedicated to improving discovery and access for South Asia materials. SAF will base its LCSH proposals on current academic research on South Asia as well as the input and experience of community stakeholders. SAF aims to submit approximately five proposals a year.

SAF collaborates closely with the Committee on South Asian Libraries and Documentation (CONSALD) Executive Board and membership. Regular updates on the funnel’s progress will be communicated at the CONSALD Fall and Spring meetings.

SAF is coordinated by Jonathan Durr (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Gautham Reddy (Emory University). Anyone interested in becoming a participant in SAF is welcome to contact the funnel coordinators. Members are expected to attend monthly meetings and contribute to developing and researching proposals for new or enhanced subject terms.
