Son & I are thinking about trying brew in a bag. Guess I need a pot, propane burner & wort chiller. Anyone got recommendations?

Thinking small maybe 8 gal. How many BTU burner do we need.

That’s how I started. I bought this pot on amazon. It may be a bit undersized for 5 gallon BIAB.

New Professional Commercial Grade 40 QT (Quart) Heavy Gauge Stainless Steel Stock Pot, 3-Ply Clad Base, Induction Ready, with Lid Cover NSF Certified Item https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FNLTCU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gSpDEb60AW0E8

I could sell you mine for much cheaper if interested. I have etched gallon markers in the pot. I have a Bayou Classic burner as well but that’s got a lot of miles on it and doesn’t seem to work as well as it used to. I’d throw it in for free if you want it. Could just need adjustments?

Coincidentally I returned to doing BIAB using the Anvil Foundry. It’s electric and fraction of cost of other similar units. It’s no Blichman Brew easy but it gets the job done.

I’m sure others here may have some good ideas as well

Thanks,
Tim

I know a couple members really like their ebiab brewing devices. I just bought a 20 gallon kettle and when I got it thought that it would be great for biab with minimal modificatins. It was under $100 for the stainless kettle with a welded drain, basket, lid the hangs on the side and a lifting hook.

How do you like the Foundry Tim?
I picked up a 7.5 gallon fermenter last year after homebrew con and it's works really well. Was considering the Foundry over Grain for the simplicity.

I second an eBIAB system. I have a grainfather and love it. It's not perfect, but it works well for what I use it for. There are plenty of systems like it that I would recommend as well.

I have been doing BIAB exclusively now for about 5 years.  I can do up to 1.080 but it gets pretty sloppy unless you have a big pot.

Speaking of which, bigger is better. I use a 10 gallon pot for 5 gall batches — and it is a bit tight and limiting. The solution is to do a dunk sparge in a separate pot with about 2 gallons of water for 5-10 mins and then merge the two for the boil. It increases the efficiency by 5-8 gravity points too with minimal effort but does take away from the purity and simplicity of BIAB — but it can be done!  I just made a Simcoe IPA with a 14.5 lb mash and it was way too sloppy, but I got it done. Best is to get at least 12 gallon pot and go from there.

Speaking of which, anyone ever done a decoction with BIAB?  I did this once for an Oktoberfest and it was a rather twisted process but I got it done.  I am planning on doing another Oktoberfest soon and do a true 4-5 month lagering but wonder if anyone else had any tips? The mash is rather diffuse in that giant pot and it is messy trying to gather 1/3rd up for the decoction…. Ugh.

Thanks, Jon

Howdy Shawn!

I like the Foundry.  It’s certainly not the best piece of brewing equipment out there but it keeps it simple and gets the job done. For me right now time is the biggest factor so especially combining it w a Kveik yeast makes my brew days much shorter. I am hoping to upgrade my electrical to toggle it to 240v. It toggles between the two voltage settings you just need different plugs/outlets. 240 will get it to heat faster. It also has an option to set a timer so you can preheat water for your brew day. Some things I don’t like about it are efficiency (I’m getting about 62-65% YMMV) and I had to add a voile bag to the basket to avoid grain particles in the kettle and ultimately in the fermenter so it’s another thing for me to clean. The lid can lock on and has a hole where you could put an airlock so you could mash boil and ferment in it if you really wanted to. The new models moved the control panel to the top (mine is on the bottom).  I now use it as my primary brew house and only break out the ssbrewtech kit for bigger batches and or higher ABV (9%+) batches so I’d say overall I’m pleased w it and for the price I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

Cheers!
Tim

Tim,
Thanks for describing the Anvil Foundry
I have the 10gallon one on order. Since the virus hit China the orders are on backorder. I can't wait to brew with it. I installed 220v in my garage so ramp up times should be shorter.

John,
Please let me know when you plan on doing your first batch, love to see it in action. Considering one for basement but with warmer weather coming lots of yard chores to keep me busy for the time being. Gonna try and brew a raspberry sour wheat this week.

Nice! They’ve been on backorder since they were announced but might take a bit longer right now. Mine came in about a month. Brewing a Rauchbier in the basement right now.

I finally received my Anvil Foundry. I brewed one batch already. I may go ahead and sew a voil bag like I have for my BIAB setup and use it in the mash tube.   I recirculated with my own pump and found that to be a nuisance since the slow flow would halt as the grain bed settled down. I am thinking a bag would allow me to increase the recirculation flow. I do not care much for mash efficiency.
I like the timer feature.  I also read about people who brew high gravity beers by just having two mashed. First mash and remove with half your grain, remove it and put the other half into the wort to mash a second time. Kind of a reverse partygyle.

I bought a bag for like 5-10$ from Thad that fits it perfectly. I have an unopened one if you want it.
