A teacher on the AAMT list in Australia has shared a very useful link on teaching mathematics.

High school and middle school teachers - visit
http://tinyurl.com/b5hcmv
and either click on the 'mathematics - understanding the score - secondary' link to the pdf file to
view it. Or, right-click to save it, and then read it.

This is a brilliant article on how to teach mathematics well. I suggest that initially you only
skim the comparison between a 'good' maths teacher and a 'satisfactory' maths teacher, and then
spend your time reading the main part of the article, which gives clear examples of how the lesson
of a 'satisfactory' teacher can be improved with some relatively simple changes. Then, go back to
the comparison and read it in detail - it makes more sense once you have read the specific examples.

Primary school teachers - a similar article for teaching maths in primary school is available at
http://tinyurl.com/cmb5e2
Either click on the 'mathematics - understanding the score - primary' link to the pdf file to view
it. Or, right-click to save it, and then read it.

Middle school teachers and high school teachers would benefit from reading this article as well, as
it will give you insight as to some of the misconceptions students may be bringing into high school.

If you want a clear, short(-ish), too-the-point article about how to teach primary and/or secondary
mathematics well, this is the best I have seen. Three thumbs up!

Cheers

Rex
