I’m scouting around for some potential speakers, but don’t really have an idea beyond Alan’s at this juncture.

Dear Self-Supplied Groupees,

I hope your Thanksgiving was refreshing.  A gentle reminder to send in thoughts this week about our speaker lineup for the January Partnership Meeting.  We need to engage those folks early as a professional courtesy.

To get us started, I think that Chrissy Lucas from OSU Extension offered one of the most relatable talks in our learning phase about domestic well stewardship, infrastructure, and showcases one well stewardship and safety effort that runs parallel to our goals.

The WG and Partnership have already heard talks about self-supplied water rights and uses from Mike Thoma (groundwater), Rachel Lovell-Ford (surface water), Teri Hranac (water rights), and Anna Pakenham-Stevenson (ODFW - instream water rights).  While Mike and Rachel's detailed database products will be valuable in our part of the Step 3 product, I think that we're going to get diminishing returns from trotting them in for a presentation again.  Perhaps Nikki or other WG reps could present highlights from what we've learned from them when we introduce our PIGS to the Partnership.

We're meeting in the Toledo Fire Hall, and I was wondering if it would be timely to have someone from City of Toledo talk about water and infrastructure for firefighting.  As we learned from Teri, emergency firefighting is an exempt use and does not require a permit to use water.  However, capacity to fight fires helps establish the infrastructure requirements for municipal and some Special District water systems.  Bulk water may also be purchased by State agencies & contractors (ODOT, ODF) for construction and rural/wildland firefighting.  Of course, wildfires can have impacts on local hydrology far greater than the water used to suppress them.  

I'm not sure who our staff contacts are as Chief Larry Robeson and Assistant Chief Dave Inman may still be recovering from a serious vehicle accident bringing a fire truck back from Alabama.  I know Dave has returned and may be back on the job.  Joe Ammons has been serving as Interim Chief during that time and Greg Musil is the Staff Captain.  Matt Thomas coordinates fire suppression on ODF protected lands within our District.

OWRD's (2016 Revision) Well Owner's Guide should be mentioned.  OHA's Domestic Well Safety Program promotes well stewardship and is responsible for the reporting associated with Real Estate Transactions.  Jay Macpherson may be able to suggest a speaker, but Tara Chetock is the Program Coordinator.

Good afternoon everyone!

 

Just a friendly reminder please send Alan and I any ideas you have for potential speakers by the end of day tomorrow! I have heard some brilliant suggestions so far and I am going to start making some calls! City of Toledo is going to be our host for this event so I am going to ask Mayor Rod Cross to say a few words and ask him if he would like to introduce Representative Gomberg to kick start the meeting. Our amazing MC for this event will be Alan!
