The domain name (stcmidvalley.org) for the Mid-valley Chapter of the STC is due to expire in three weeks. I paid to renew it last year.

Should the domain name be renewed this year or just let it expire?

Any thoughts?

FYI we can get a URL on webs.com for free...it would be something like "www.stcmidvalley.webs.com"
I'm not currently a member of STC, but I am webmaster for AMWA Northwest chapter. I have time in August to could set up a free website for you on www.webs.com -- though it will have ads unless we pay about $4 per month to get rid of the ads.
I am transitioning back to freelance technical writing after six years as an RN. We'll have a new tech writing instructor at Rogue Community College next fall so there is a chance for networking there, although currently we have only about two employed tech writers at local companies in the Rogue Valley.

I am relatively new to the group, but my 2 cents…

You should not have to pay out of your own pocket for this.

The economy is not going to pickup significantly for the next 3 – 5 years.

Therefore, I doubt that there will be enough jobs in STC related areas in the mid-valley to re-group the chapter any time soon.

I say let it expire.

Besides, who knows what may take its place in the next few years the way the industry and society changes. Right now a Facebook or Twitter presence may be all that is needed to inform a group and improve participation.

Why not encourage people to use the chapter's section of MySTC on stc.org? That doesn't cost anything. It's already there. You can make it public, which means (I think) that non-members can access it. So it can serve as a chapter website.    ...RM
