Hello, group.

I recently moved to Eugene from Colorado and was thinking about
joining the Mid-Valley chapter of STC. After snooping around a bit, it
seems the site has been hijacked by a German company or something. I
don't quite understand. Does the chapter have any online resources
other than this message board?

I was also thinking of joining the Willamette Valley chapter, but it
seems to focus on the Portland area. I am a recent college graduate
and I am primarily interested in job postings.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Dade Johnardt

Hi Dade,

Welcome to the area! I think the official STC Mid-Valley Chapter has been dissolved, and this group has taken its place. Someone posted a job notice here recently, so hopefully this group can fill some of that need for you.
We also organize periodic get-togethers, like the one being discussed for next week. Those meetings are good ways to meet area tech writers, share stories, and possibly hear of additional job openings or potential places to look for work.

You're right about the Willamette Valley Chapter being Portland-focused. But, they often have great meeting content and networking opportunities. Some of us from this end of the valley make the trip to attend those meetings. I emailed Duane Proefrock (duanepr...@msn.com) from that chapter the other day and learned that they will have another meeting in September. You can subscribe to their chapter email list via this page: http://mailman.stc.org/mailman/listinfo/wvcannounce.
I hope the above information is helpful and that you will join us next Thursday in Corvallis.

Take care,
Kim

This local newsgroup that supports the Mid-Valley Chapter membership posts great job openings periodically. And if it's of interest to anyone, I've got a new professional blog at http://tradebookauthor.com that's aimed at helping people break into publishing.  I've got a series on the basics of becoming an author that's posting right now.

Welcome to Oregon, Dade.

Hope you can make it on Thursday.

Then, besides the Colorado / Oregon culture shock, you can get the feel for Duck / Beaver cultural differences!  ;-)

I look forward to meeting you,

Lew

Thank you for the warm welcomes :) The culture shock isn't too bad. I
lived in Eugene around 2004-2006 and spent a few months in Corvallis
during that same time frame. I liked the area so much I had to come
back.

The biggest culture shock that I experienced when I got here a few
months ago was "Where are all the dogs and bicycles?" Yes, you read
that correctly. After living in Fort Collins, CO, Eugene seems behind
in the dog and bike departments. I know, it's hard to believe. I have
trouble believing it myself, sometimes.

I'll be there on Thursday. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys.

Dade

This is off topic, but I have a pair of tickets to see Garrison
Keillor at the Cuthbert Friday night that I can't use. They're $56
each--right near the front--but I'll take less so they don't go to
waste. Please ping me tonight (Tuesday) or during the day Wednesday. Thanks!
