Was just at Baskett Slough NWR.  Noted the extreme lack of acorns on the ground compared to other years.  I'm aware that some years acorns are sparse as a survival/propagation mechanism for the oaks and that subsequent years may be plentiful mast years.  Am wondering if Oregon White Oaks in other parts of the Valley are on the same "schedule" (?) for acorn production. If anyone has noticed.  Also, wonder if the acorns that Acorn Woodpeckers cache in trees last more than one year (for edibility)?  Otherwise, it seems that Acorn Woodpeckers might be in for a very lean year.

Acorns from the oaks at my "bird spa" were small and few.

Hello,

Some areas have a lot of acorns, others don't. Lisa says there are some dense patches at Bald Hill Farm. At the Oregon White Oak grove on the OSU campus, 26th & Washington. There were so many acorns you couldn't avoid stepping on them. Some other areas where acorns were common last year, I've seen only a few.
