I just rec'd a 'private message' from someone named Robert Baker that looks as if it might have been generated through the Mid-Valley Nature Group site.  It contains a copy of one of my entries from Oct2020 and asked me why it was 'pinned'.  Although the subject line refers to it as a 'private message', there is no other indication of it's origin and no other reference to our MVN io group.  The source is a personal gmail address.

I'm not comfortable with responding to the inquiry directly, without evidence that it is from a legitimate group member.  This just is pricking my spam/phishing paranoia.  I haven't noticed any other MVN entries from a Robert Baker.

I have rec'd messages directly from members before, but have always recognized them from the group and they've always been related to a current thread - not something from five years back.

If this is a legitimate question from one of the members - the answer is that I have no idea.  I'm not familiar enough with the workings of the platform to know what 'pinned' is used for or how to do it.  When I go directly to the ioGroup page I do see an icon of a push pin in the options, but don't know what it does.  If it's a problem with the workings of the site, please address it to a moderator.

If you (Robert B) have a question regarding the content of the specific entry, please let me know who you are and what the nature of your inquiry is.

Thanks all

Carma Henry

Weird. I’d let it go unless you get a lot more information.

Hi Carma,

I visited the public group page at https://groups.google.com/g/mid-valley-nature and noticed that a "pin" feature has been added to the interface there. There was indeed a pinned discussion of yours from October 2020 at the top of the list of discussions. How this happened, I don't know!  If only moderators can use this feature, then one of us might have clicked it by accident. I've unpinned the discussion, so it should no longer appear once the page is refreshed.

Although the content of the group is public, as far as I know, only members should be able to view email addresses.  Many members of the group receive messages, but prefer not to participate in discussions themselves. So there are many long-term group members whose email addresses you won't recognize.

My feeling is that the message isn't malicious, but if you begin to receive additional messages that you think are suspicious, please forward them to me.

Thanks,
Lisa
