As I drove north on I-5. I noticed a Heron rookery off on the right in a stand of trees just before the Brooks off ramp. Birds were sitting on nests and two flew over my car. I haven’t explored the area to get closer, but thought it was a strange place for a rookery.

Hi Helen, that rookery has been used for a long time. It’s fun to see it before the trees have leafed out.

I’ve seen a lot of raptors and other critters (coyotes) in the field to the east of the cottonwoods. Worth taking the exit. But there is a lot of traffic on that road.
