who's this big green caterpillar?

Jim and I spotted this nearly 3” long caterpillar working its way across our dried lawn.   It may have come from a nearby big-leafed maple, and we’re trying to figure out where it might be headed, perhaps to pupate?

Our books don’t show any similar butterfly caterpillar anyway.

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks, Stephanie, I think that's it!  We have seen adults here before.  Both larva and adult are very impressively large!
