The other day we heard our first tree crickets in the yard. We'll hear them through September. You've been hearing spring field crickets and their kin but now there are some tree crickets mature enough to begin their chorus. Both tree and field crickets make their sound by rubbing their wings together.
Tree Crickets are in the family Oecanthidae and are long and pale green and all their legs long. Field crickets are in the Gryllidae family, are more compact, brown or dark brown, and only have long back legs.
Some of the common tree crickets live in trees and shrubs white a couple of species live in open, grassy habitats.
