I just reread some posts about eastern gray squirrels sent to the Mid-valley Nature list from April and August of 2017. Since we moved to Corvallis in early fall 2016, I had only noticed the native western grays and Douglas squirrels around town. That has changed dramatically in the last several weeks.

About a month ago, I started seeing at least one eastern gray on my walks to Winco through the neighborhood to the west of Kings Blvd (not to the east of Winco, where Jamie Simmons had previously reported them). Then, a few weeks ago on a bike ride through Willamette Park, I noticed one at the edge of the riparian area east of the ball fields. And now, this morning, there was one in our backyard on NW McKinley (a couple blocks west of 29th).

Either I suddenly developed an eye for them, or they may be expanding around town (perhaps last year's bumper crop of acorns gave them a boost?).

I dug through my photos and found one of an Eastern Gray Squirrel in my yard on November, 2011.
The attached was taken January, 2012.

So they are by no means new to Corvallis. Nancy, your sightings might be of newly dispersed young?

Presently I have as many as 3 at a time in my yard. But I also sometimes have up to 3 Western Gray Squirrels. Not typically both species at once, but they do seem to coexist peacefully.
I'm located about 3 blocks (as the flying squirrel flies) due east of Winco. Nothing unique about my neighborhood.

Hi Nancy,

I've seen Eastern Gray Squirrels in our NE Corvallis neighborhood. We had one pass through our yard once, but never saw it again. We see at least one on the west side of Village Green Park. In the Satinwood neighborhood, not far from the hospital, they seem to be more common than any other place I've seen them in town.

I've seen Eastern Grays around Grant & 27th. I've seen them closer to downtown. I saw one this spring near 9th & Harrison. I used to live in that neighborhood from 1999-2005 and only ever saw Western Grays.

I haven't seen Eastern Grays on the OSU Campus yet, where Western Grays are still very common.
