On Tuesday (12/22) 36 persons -- all following COVID guidelines --
participated independently in the Corvalllis Christmas Bird Count. The count
was not sponsored or organized by the Audubon Society of Corvallis this
year. Interest in conducting the count was nonetheless expressed initially
by Fred Ramsey and in response many local birders joined the effort. No
post-count meeting was held. Participants counted 113 species and 45,526
individual birds. For comparison, during 1988-2017 the median number of
species found by this count was 120 and the median number of participants
was 46. Highlights this year were a Nashville Warbler, a Burrowing Owl, a
Bonaparte's Gull, 3 Say's Phoebes, 2 Prairie Falcons, and 2 Northern
Shrikes. Numbers possibly worth mentioning included 9 Barn Owls, 23 Black
Phoebes, and 77 Red Crossbills.
