For our May 2025 production the Players are looking to perform ‘Murder in Play’  by Simon Brett, a classic Whodunit, with a play within a play, provides us with a cast of likely suspects while also poking fun at them. In this case a theatrical company, with a tyrannical director, ‘luvvies’ with a past, egos bigger than talent, and a long-suffering stage manager…

Our director,  Paul Davey, says that he plans to direct Murder in Play, with rather more sensitivity than ‘Stanislavsky Wannabe’ Boris Smolensky’s bombastic method actor, as he directs the melodramatic ‘Murder at Priorswell Manor’. Our laughter will be strictly intentional as we keep the atmosphere light, and the action moves along amidst red herrings.

It’s an ensemble piece with roles that are broadly written, and so will be fun to play, and with most of them in Boris’s play within a play there is the opportunity to show a different persona in the role within the role. This is especially true after Boris recasts after the unfortunate death of a cast member who is not required in Act 2…

As always, playing age is far more important than actual, and there is always some leeway in the recommendations, so I’ve not specified them by role, but the suggested ages are men 30s, 40s 60s, and women 20s to middle-age…. So, something for everyonewe we hope.

Dates - there will be a read through on Monday Jan 20th, 2025, with auditions on Tuesday Jan 28th both at Ditchling Village Hall at 7:30pm.
