Joe Huang is abusing his authority as administrator of the Rockville Ultimate Google and WhatsApp groups — unilaterally and with no consultations altering game start times, making weather on/off calls, and ejecting me when I mildly dissented. We need a better way.

You are certainly free to try anything you want. But keep in mind you are the self proclaimed "safest player" with 0 votes besides yourself.

I never made that claim.

Multiple players, including Me and Wei, have heard it from your mouth.

Not so.  I’ve claimed and still claim to be within the normal range of safety. Not to be the safest.

In any case, all of this is irrelevant “what about” distraction from your blatant abuse of power as to game times and communication group membership.

If other players besides disagree with me, they are not usually banned as I can engage with them in a helpful way. Yo nare free to pretend that your flawed view of the rules of ultimate which allow your disc at all costs behavior has zero impact on other people's actions or attitudes towards you, but that is in violation of objective reality.

Your exact words were "I am the safest player on the field". If you don't remember saying this, consider drinking less alcohol as this may inhibit the formation of long term memory.

Joe; would you be okay letting someone else take the reins?  I don’t care either way, but I’m sure someone else would be happy to take over or share duties and it could cause less controversy.

If nothing else, you could ask.  No harm in that.  These things are best done with some sort of consensus.

Cheers,

JV

Hey JV,

I would be willing to consider it. My primary concern is that in the past, when other people have posted game on, they have sometimes not included location or time information with the post. This has resulted in facebook messages to the page asking where or when the game is. I would prefer if all posts include this information so I don't have to worry about constantly checking facebook. If someone is willing to include all relevant information in the game ON posts, it would be less work for me.

Joe has proven himself to be a dictator. He has kicked me off the other group so I can't post there. As long as he is group owner he can remove any admin he wants. I'd be happy for whomever to use this group for planning pickup. My view is pickup is by definition a consensus driven activity.

To be clear, yes I am willing to step down as moderator/administrator from all platforms as long as whoever steps in is willing to take control of the facebook page and google group.

Thanks Joe, please do that. The community should discuss replacement names and bylaws. I suggest we identify a leadership group of 5-10 longstanding and regular players, with a smaller number of timely input-providers on any decision constituting a quorum.  That’s the model used at Blueberry and (less formally, but in effect) at Westbard, Fernwood, and elsewhere.

Joe,

It might be easiest if 1-3 people are all admins for all platforms.

That works, but in general there is an owner who has permissions over all other moderators, and i don't think sharing the email account (rockul...@gmail.com) will work well. On google groups, an 'owner' has complete control over all other aspects of the group including other moderators. The facebook page is similar except the super role is called 'administrator'. If you set multiple people to the owner/administrator role, that person will be able to remove all other moderators. If you have specific people in mind, feel free to email me ddirectly.

To be clear, there was an incident a while back where we played at Rock Terrace school when it was soaked and basically completely tore up the field. After that, I was pretty reluctant to call game ON when the conditions were wet. It is clear that many other players do not share my concerns.

Honestly, playing ultimate is not very fun when I have to keep a wide margin from certain other players to avoid collisions/being stepped on/being backeded on a follow thru, so I will likely just completely step down.

A certain individual who started this group was banned from rockville group because he was mad that I didn't respond to his email within 24 hours like he is my boss.

Dear All,

I'm happy to help out in any way I can.  That said, there are others who have known the Rockville group much longer than I have, so I defer to others and will "serve if called."

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the field soon.

Marc

PS:  As someone who plays (often badly) at Rockville, Blueberry, and Fernwood with some regularity (plus Wheaton in the winter), and occasionally forays to Norwood and Flower Hill, I've thought about helping create an umbrella for the local ultimate community.  Frederick has done this with what seem like good results.

Hello,

I know I'm way out of my lane here as I'm a rare Rockville attendee, but I'm one of the organizers (along with Marc Sorini and others) of the Blueberry game. The committee system works and has made Blueberry more organized.

If weather and field conditions are ideal, I auto-send an email to call the game approximately 12-24 hours in advance via Google Groups and Whatsapp. If playing or driving conditions are such that it requires a committee, I consult with Marc and the others to make our best attempt to call a game. It's not always correct but we do our best.

We also have used the committee to pull permits, plan special events as the annual Hat tournament and our recent Christmas day game (I was very happy to see Rockville and Blueberry players playing together on a beautiful spirited afternoon!)

I recognize and respect Joe's desire to preserve fields. It's certainly within the rights of parks and rec or local government officials to permanently kick us off or worse, close the fields for other groups. While calling a game off is not a popular decision, it's sometimes the right decision.

Spirit of the game is a real concept and what makes our sport of Ultimate unique. I hope you all come to a good inclusive working system. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me :)

Happy New Year!
Dan

I agree with all that, including the part about calling game off sometimes being the right call for weather and field health.  My motivating concern has been that that call be made with a reasonable degree of consultation/collective decision making.  That hasn’t been happening.
