Hi everyone,

If you've been keeping an eye on the tracking@microtransat email address, you'll have noticed that my Backup Tracker is now up and running again.

I've made a few improvements. You can now send it a message in the format t=xx, where xx is the update interval in hours. The next time the tracker refreshes, it will automatically adopt the new reporting frequency. I thought this could be useful in a couple of situations: increasing the update rate after launch or when approaching shore for more accurate recovery, then reducing it while the boat is far out in the Atlantic to save satellite airtime.

I've also updated some of my server-side scripts following the transition from Twitter to X. Unfortunately, posting through the X API is no longer free—it now costs $0.20 for a post that includes a URL. Since my updates include a Google Maps link, I've changed things so that X is only updated on every 10th satellite ping. You can still follow along at @xatlantic2.

I've also been working on a new version of the tracking app. If you have an iPhone, you can install TestFlight and join the beta here:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/QGquUv81 (You will need to wait 48 hours for my latest build to be approved)

It's currently still displaying data from my last attempt, but it should give you a good idea of where the app is heading.

If the competition is still running after my next sea trials, I'll submit a team. If not, I'll continue in the spirit of the competition. I've switched to the non-autonomous category, so rather than letting the boat decide its own course, I'll be sending heading commands manually via satellite. With the mainsail fixed, it seems more effective to choose a course based on the prevailing wind direction.

Anyway, good luck to everyone with your projects. I'll post another update after the next round of sea trials.

Best wishes,

Jamie

Bonjour,

fichier GPX : voir http://asprominiji.cotec.free.fr/gpx

Hello,

I’m not a die-hard fan of X, and since you didn't provide much detail in
your email, I’d like to know more about your boat—or get some info if
we’ve already been in touch—so I can look up your details in the
Microtransat records.

I sail the MiniJI, a small 3.65m single-handed keelboat; to analyze our
races, we use GPS trackers that generate GPX files (see
http://asprominiji.cotec.free.fr/gpx).

Why not use your data to create a GPX file yourself and make it
available online or as an email attachment for the group?

A quick bit of help from AI (I’m a fan of Claude.ai) could generate a
simple tool to convert your data into GPX format without requiring a
paid account.

Best regards

Bonjour Fr.

I like the history section of the Microtransat site - I hadn't been there in a long time but looks great.

My previous attempts were:

That'll Do (2016)
That'll Do Two (2018)
EC Crossing (2019)
Endeavour (2020)
Return To Sender (2021)

This boat is identical hull and setup to Return to Sender (2021), which was tracked for 6 Months before running aground for the final time in Spain - following an initial relaunch from the Isles of Scilly - but subsequently hit by 11M waves and gale force winds. I will send a video and an entry for the current effort after next week's sea trials in Brighton, but 'Banana' - you will understand why - is mostly software updates.

I will add a gpx download option for the app - if you have an iPhone or iPad you can download the beta version now that has the last attempt on. Screenshot attached if you don't - but it allows you to track the boat, the telemetry, start line, finish line and track.

Best wishes,

Jamie

It connects to the database, so when the new boat launches you can download the latest files at any point... or you can go come to the light and ditch Android... I have just added Push notifications so every time the database updates you get a push notification :) Now just to avoid the rocks at launch!

Best wishes for now,

Jamie

It's a good thing I'm not dogmatic!
A French commercial showed a father telling his son to ditch his Clio because it wasn't "expensive enough, my son."

Android vs. iOS is like Windows vs. Linux (with macOS being even worse): no trolling, please ;-))))))
