Hey, this might help:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/xbox360faq.htm

Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Xbox 360 :-)

In order to update your Fable 2 game you have to be connected to Xbox Live.

The MCE quick reference should cover it
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/mceuserguide.htm but basically left
stick or d-pad to move around, A to select, B to cancel/go back,
bumpers are fast forward/rewind and triggers are chapter skip.

When you launch a game and (I presume) are logged into Live, if there
are game updates available, it will ask you if you wish to apply the
update. Updates are saved to the hard drive/memory card so you only
have to apply them once.

The OS can be updated as well, like the major dashboard overhaul last
year...think of it like flashing the BIOS on a PC, and updating some
system files on the HD/card.

How to navigate a DVD menu? Insert DVD, when it loads just use Xbox
controller to move through the menu, hit a button to select. How hard can
that be?
