Hello all.

I'm contemplating selling my sd-5109 dvd player so I can
afford an X-box since it plays dvd. Does anyone know any
metrics on picture quality using the xbox to play dvd on a
toshiba 40x81 or similar high quality hdtv? Also does
anyone know if the xbox upgrades 480p dvd to 1080i hdtv
through some kind of atsc converter?

The choice of output resolution is up to the developer. Among the current
crop of games there are some that ouput 480p, and some that output 16x9.
From what I have heard, DOA3 treats the extra screen real estate as more
fighting area.

In the future there may be some 720p or 1080i, but afaik, no current games
use it.

Chris-

I dont think you understand his question. ( Which I am also
anxiously awaiting an answer)

I think another way to ask it would be:

Is the XBOX with DVD kit and HDTV AV pack the functional equivilant of
a progressive scan DVD player with component output?

The answer is not yet. The hardware is capable of doing progressive scan DVD
playback but M$ disabled this in software for legal reasons. There are
rumors that M$ might release a patch to unlock this feature.

Thank you, I did misundertand the question. The answer is no, the DVD kit
does not output DVD playback in progressive scan. As far as 1080i, I have
no idea.

Don,
The XBox DVD output is 480i only, even with the HD component outputs.
XBox outputs GAMES at 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i IF the game supports that
mode, but does not scale if the game does not (for example, it doesn't take
a 480p game like Halo and convert it to 1080i output...)

There is not a current 1080i game on the market that I am aware of, though
many say they are coming.

There is not a current plan to release a scalar for the DVD playback. I
am interested in building a DVD w/scalar playback add-on, and am working on
the initial plans for that device, again, very early thought-stage...

Hope this helps,
Paul
