I hope this might help - but first, lets get this out of the way -

1. Some people choose NOT to use credit cards and are over the age of 18.

2. Microsoft support has confirmed the ONLY reason they want a CC initially
is for age
and identity verification. (Later, of course, you can use it to buy stuff!)

3. Yes, I read the box, and yes, I know it says CC required. I, like many
people, assumed
my debit card would work with xbox live, just like my bank and Visa say it
should, and
just like it's worked for everything from groceries, to gas, to plane
tickets over the
internet.

4. No, I am not going to try to get my bank to change whatever arcane policy
might be
keeping my debit card from working. They are Wells Fargo, and they won't
change.

5. I have nothing against Microsoft and I do NOT see this as their trying to
"stick it to the
little guy", as some others have posted. I for one WANT MS to make lots
o'money on
the Xbox and Xbox live.

SO - If you've tried to use a debit card, please post a simple response
"name of your bank, type of card (Visa, MC, Amex), worked/didn't work".

Maybe we can help some folks eagerly awaiting their Xbox Live experience
make a good choice. I for one will be voting with my money, and going to
another bank once I find out which ones work.

Here's my answer:

Wells Fargo, Visa card, Didn't work.

Thanks for helping out!

The card that I heard Didn't work are, those people that moved, after they
got the card. Billing address did not match!! Also card must start with a #
4 or 5, Visa / MasterCard Logo on then.

Myself, used an MasterCard credit card to sign up, but after a few weeks,
change it to an Visa Check Card (National City), with no problem.

I'm from the UK and I used a LloydsTSB Visa Debit Card when I ordered the UK
beta kit. Then filled in the subscription signup using the same Debit Card.
Both times it was accepted.

My local credit union Visa debit card worked. (It always works when a
regular visa works.)

My Wells Fargo ATM/Debit MasterCard worked just fine! I don't know what
your problem is. Are you sure you entered your correct number and didn't
screw up 1 digit or something?

if you use netscape or any other mozilla based newsgroup reader you
can simply click VIEW - SORT BY - ORDER RECEIVED

This takes care of wrong dates.

Microsoft support was wrong on why it did not work. The company that handles
the credit cards transactions for Microsoft reported to Microsoft that they
can not process Debit cards. Some debit cards do work though so this list is
of value.

My Wells Fargo debit card with the MasterCard logo worked fine for my live
account.

debit card is where you can use it as a credit card but it pulls money
straight from checking or savings ( either i guess ) . . . but you can only
take out or spend what you have

so a debit is spending money you have
and credit is where your loaned the money

I used a debit card with a visa logo and had no problems with it.
