what is a game engine?

and in halo 2 that is the actuall game engine so that
means what? that that will be what it would look like if
i was playing it in a game.. like coop would have my pal
looking as good as the chief in the trailer?

The engine is what runs the game. Think of it as a car engine. The same
engine can run many cars. The same is true with games. Unreal Tournament
uses the Unreal engine as does Deus Ex. There are many games that use the
same engines as others.

I would add that there are different types of "engines" that may be
combined together into the "game engine". The graphics engine is
responsible for building, transforming, rendering, and texturing
graphical representations of game objects. The physics engine is
responsible for calculating the interaction of objects in the game world
based on mass, density, air/water resistance, etc. The AI engine is
responsible for determining the reactions of computer-controlled
objects/characters based on game events.

I'm not a game developer, but this is how I understand the pieces.
