I am a huge fan of the original PC-based and one of my driving reasons
behind my recent XBox purchase was the imminent arrival of UC.

However, after thinking about it a little I think that UC is probably going
to be a little underwhelming. There is no doubt that a game like Unreal
would be far superior on a PC.

Not simply to due higher resolution graphics and sharper colors. But also
because of the ability to continuously downloads new mods, maps and
missions. And that is exactly what made the original UT so much fun.

Your thoughts on this...

PS - On a different note, I've heard that the first year of Xbox Live is
complimentary. Do you know how much the annual subscription is going to be?
Also how much does the Live Starter Kit cost?

Then you're certainly a newbie to the Xbox.
That exactly what Xbox Live WILL allow you to do.

Wheither it's done is another story.

As a UT long time player of UT, I thought a lot about the performance if the
Xbox version compared to the PC version. As an Xbox owner I intend to buy UC
the day it comes out on XBox, but when I upgrade my PC I will probably also
buy the PC version, to get the higher performance, as UC on PC looks too
cool to miss out on.

Why would you assume that before you'd even played it? The higher resolution
on the PC doesn't matter when you're sitting on your couch and your TV is 6
feet away...the increased distance from the screen makes the effective
resolution comparable - but much bigger!

I don't doubt that they will release additional mods and maps as they go
along. But personally I figure after 3 months or so I'll switch to
GhostRecon or something else.

You buy the kit (for $50 - price of 1 game!), take it home, pop in the CD
(you must be connected to the internet via cable/DSL), and then you will
enter a credit-card number as part of the login, enter your desired
GamerTag, etc.

Your credit/debit card will *NOT* be charged! (A hold of $1 may be placed on
debit cards while they verify the account or something).

You need the CC for unique identification; proof of adulthood or legal adult
permission; plus for premium content downloads like extra maps or updates or
whatever (some of these will certainly be free as well). If you decide to
re-subscribe in Nov 2003 or 12 months after sign-up, then you will be billed
to the same CC.

No pricing has yet been set for next year; probably monthly fees of $5-$10,
single payment options, premium memberships, etc.

The question at hand is "Will it be done?" And, if so, can it be done
without having to charge an extra fee for each download?

Tried them both (if you've seen the XBOX Live! Bootcamp photos, there's
a pic of the back of my head while I was playing UC), and actually,
they're pretty equivalent - although I can't guarantee for the framerate
until I try it on my HDTV at home.

Certainly, the only major difference between the two is the fact that
one's played with a mouse, the other with a joypad. (And frankly, I
prefer mouse).

Oh, that and I think that pumping the sound through my living room
system instead of the PC will sound *much* better.

Not only is it possible to download more content (MechAssualt and
SplinterCell have already been confirmed to have content ready for dl), but
you are overlooking the one aspect of live that will games like UC and Ghost
Recon better on Live than PC - the communicator. I play shooters online
almost nightly from my PC, and the single biggest drag (next to a**hole
TKer's) is the lack of communication. Granted for a simple deathmatch, it
doesn't make much difference, but I think that communication is going to
open up so many more possibilities for team games online. I can't wait for
UC's bombing run, it going to be awesome.

Live will also take care of the TKer problem as well. Because we all have a
permanent ID online, our reputations will follow us, allowing the online
community to police these kinds of problems better.

Boid said that all downloads for UC will be free (I'm pretty sure I remember
correctly.) So, that sounds like it will have downloads.

What are TKer's?

The only problem I have is the controller. I've played
and beaten Halo, but the controller is no substitute for
mouse and keyboard in FPS games (most especially ghost
recon.)

Not true. Xbox Live will also be used for downloads as
well as gaming. MechAssault, for example, will allow you
the ability to download new Mechs, maps, so on and so
forth. Splinter Cell is rumored to have downloadable
missions as well, but don't get too excited until it's
confirmed. I'd imagine that UC would have the same
capabilities.

As for the cost of Xbox Live, it will be 50 Washingtons.

Not just most...ALL Unreal Championship downloads will be free through
Xbox Live. The game doesn't even support the premium content billing
system.
