Hi, I have been using Word as part of Office 97
Professional for a number of years. I do a lot of
technical drawing using a very simple drawing package
called MSDraw version 1.01 (which I'll call MSD101) which
came with earlier versions of Word 2.0 and with Works
v4.5. It is easy to install as part of Works v4.5 and
Word97 then quite happily allows me to either Insert,
Object, MSD101 or edit existing MSD101 objects in the
MSD101 program.

All was well until two days ago I downloaded Microsoft
Draw 98 (which I'll call MD98) thinking that this was an
upgrade that may have some additional features (like
rotating fonts, line styles in any thickness etc.).

However, without my knowledge or permission MD98 took away
all access to MSD101 within Word. All my existing MSD101
drawings are openable, but only within the MD98 program. I
do not want to use MD98, mainly because it does not appear
to have moveable grid lines which give a 4 to 5 digit
positional reference that I can use to snap to for
accurate scaling of objects. I know I ought to be moving
on from MSD101 to a CAD package, but MSD101 does 95% of
what I want and is so simple to use, as yet I have not
found anything that would persuade me to change.

I have tried to find out how to correct this problem from
the MS web site and can find nothing to solve it. I have
tried the following to get back to where I was:

1. Un-installed MD98, both using it's Set-up program and
using Add/Remove programs under Control Panel.

2. Un-installed MS Office 97 Pro completely, including
deleting within Explorer all MS Office directories under
C:\Program Files (there appeared to be some files and
folders left that may have had some MD98 files in them).

3. Re-installed MS Office 97 Pro.

4. Re-installed MS Works v4.5. This has re-installed
MSD101 under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared, but it still cannot be accessed from Word97.

5. Using Ontrack Fix-It Utilities 99 I have used their
FixWizard to remove unnecessary registry items and to fix
broken registry links (of which there where 86).
After having tried all of this I am at a complete loss as
to how Word97 can even find MD98, but it still won't allow
me to access or use MSD101. Although it lists MD98 in the
Insert, Object drop down menu, because I seem to have
successfully deleted MD98, it can't actually open MD98
anymore. It also can no longer open MSD101 objects even
though I have tried to re-install it for a 2nd time from
my Worksv4.5 CDRom.

I have thought about using Fix-It's System Saver to
Restore System Files, but the last Snapshot that I have
was back in June 02 and since then I have upgraded my
system by downloading IE6 etc. If I did try a Restore,
which files should I try to restore and would I have to
first remove IE6 (i.e. go back to IE5x)?

I have also searched the whole of my hard drive for files
containing the text string "Microsoft Draw 98". Explorer
has returned the file System under C:\Windows and a back-
up of it under Fix-it utilities as the only files
containing this string.

Could someone please advise me how I can get back to where
Word97 will allow me to create and edit MSD101 objects in
the MSD101 program. I need answers as a matter of urgency
since I use this drawing package quite a lot.

Thanks in anticipation. Steve Rothon

Hi Steve,
Perhaps if you try asking in microsoft.public.word.drawing.graphics you
might find the answer to your question. If you do get an answer there,
would you please post it here so we all will know the solution to this?
Thanks.

Good luck,
Andrea Martin - Works MVP

Hi Andrea,
I have already posted this item where you suggest and in
one or two other places. Yours is the first response!
Thanks for the suggestion

Hi Steve,
You might also want to try the Publisher group with apologies for
being-off-topic-but-you're-desperate. Some users there are familiar with
MSDraw, and it's a friendly group.

Keep us posted,
Andrea

Hi Steve,
I tried searching the MS Knowlege Base. Hope these are of some help:

Draw98: How to Remove (Uninstall) Microsoft Draw 98
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;179094

Works: How to Correctly Re-register Shared Applications

Good luck, Steve. Didn't anybody respond in the drawing ngs?

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for the suggestions.
I carried out the instructions in MSKB 179094 and seem to
have successfully eliminated MD98 from Word97's Insert,
Object menu.
I also carried out the instructions in MSKB 150175,
including using Works Setup to completely Remval All
program files, and then carried out a fresh install of
Works v4.5. This sadly did not renew the availability of
MSD101 in Word 97's Insert, Object menu. Also,
dbl.clicking on a MSD101 object produces the error
message "Word cannot edit the MSDraw".
So before I go for the "Clean Install" as suggested by our
friend in Publisher, do you have any other ideas.
I had previously searched the MSKB and found Q140870, all
suggested methods do not work or do not achieve what I
want.
Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Steve,
I'm out of ideas :(
Let us know how the clean install goes.

Best regards,
Andrea

Hi Andrea
I thought I'd post the solution hear rather than at the
end of all our correspondence.
Before going for the Clean Install I tried the following:
1. Removing all MSDraw, MSDraw97 entries in the Registry
as well as those suggested in MSKB 179094. I then
uninstalled and reinstalled MSWorksV4.5. This reinstated
MSDraw ver.1.01 in the Word 97 Insert, Object menu, but
still would not allow me to install or edit MSD101 objects.
2. Completely uninstalled Works and Office 97, then
reinstalled again in reverse order. Still no change to 1.
above. The error message given was "The server
application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make
sure the application is properly installed, and that it
has not been deleted, moved, or renamed".
3. Using Fix-It99 I decided to Back-up my System Files and
then Restore the set from June 02. I Restored the
following files (not knowing which one(s) would do the
trick):
a) Registry, b) config.sys, c) autoexec.bat, d)
system.ini, e) win.ini, f) protocol.ini and g) command.com.
This has restored my system such that I can now insert and
edit MSD101 objects in Word97. The curious thing though
was that my Word Drawing Templates no longer had the
MSDraw101 objects emmbedded!
Still the main thing is that I seem to have been able to
get back to my original setting without upsetting anything
else (at least as far as I know)
I'll copy this solution to the other entries that I have
put this original message.

Thanks once again for all your help and suggestions.
