Even with the availability of internet video tutorials, which are a more modern method of learning the guitar, the popularity of starting guitar books remains in 2024.

Thousands of guitar lesson books are sold every day, so "learn guitar books"—both acoustic and electric—are here to stay.

I decided to purchase, read, evaluate, and compare a few of these books to see if they held up for this reason.

My order was not made at random. They were selected from online bookshops' best-seller lists.

This implies that the most popular beginner guitar books should be these highly sought-after titles.

or those with the most effective marketing 😀

I've been teaching guitar for more than 20 years, and because I love technology, I usually recommend online video courses to my students. I think the most effective approach to educate yourself how to play the guitar these days is to use video tutorials, especially with the advent of 21st-century multimedia technologies. After the book evaluations, I'll include some suggestions for video lessons, just in case you want to see another aspect of playing the guitar.

2024's top beginning guitar books

This is the moment you've been waiting for: my evaluations of the best guitar instruction books are now available.

I'll let you know which ones I think are the greatest later.

Guitar Head's Guitar Exercises for Novices: 10x Your Guitar Skills in 10 Minutes a Day

Independent practice is one of the main obstacles faced by beginning guitarists. They end up doodling, playing stuff they already know, or just not practicing enough since they don't know what and how to practice.

I enjoy the Guitar Exercises for Beginners book because of this. It provides an answer to this issue and points newcomers in the proper way.

The book offers 100 exercises that are essential for novice guitarists to do in order to improve their technique. The exercises commence at the early beginner level and progressively escalate in complexity, mirroring the gradual improvement of a beginner musician. The author does a fantastic job of outlining the proper and improper ways to practice as well as the recommended duration for each exercise.

On theguitarhead.com, every workout is provided as an audio file so you can hear what you should be playing. This, in my opinion, is a crucial component of any serious guitar book published in 2024 and is essential for learning music.

There are excellent ratings for this practice book on Amazon. Out of over 1,100 ratings, the average rating is 4.5 stars. 89% of users rated it with four or five stars.

As you learn to play, I suggest using this book as a supplemental daily exercise guide to maintain consistency and effectiveness in your practice sessions. By the time you finish reading its about 140 pages, you will have a firm understanding of the fundamentals of guitar playing.

Jon Chappell and Mark Phillips' Guitar for Dummies

The just released 4th version of Guitar for Dummies (2016) is an over 400-page book that will undoubtedly have you igniting your guitar before you've finished reading it 🙂.

The DVD from the previous edition was dropped for this new edition, which instead added online video and audio elements to complement the lessons in the book. Even though they only included 85 videos and 95 audio files, they didn't go overboard, but it's still a positive move. You need auditory tools to study music; reading about it won't cut it.

It's clear from reading Guitar for Dummies that this book is intended for a wider audience than Teach Yourself to Play Guitar, which is primarily for novices. It contains a ton of information and theory that a guitarist at the intermediate level could find helpful. This book delves into the specifics of several genres in addition to covering the fundamentals.

As of this writing, this updated version has not yet received any reviews after its recent publication. Seventy-nine percent of buyers gave the preceding third edition four or five stars.Overall, I would suggest this if you want to continue studying from a guitar book.

Learn to Play the Guitar on Your Own: A Simple and Fast Overview for Novices

At now less than $6, this paperback is the best-selling guitar learning book on Amazon.com. There is no CD or other content included.

This little book, which is only 47 pages long, covers all the fundamentals of learning how to play the guitar. Similar to an impulsive guitar primer.

One could argue that the book fulfills its promise of giving a beginning guitarist an introduction to the instrument. It ends at the beginner level and is intended for total beginners. It doesn't contain any theoretical lessons that are even slightly complicated.

There are many diagrams in the book, which will be beneficial to new readers. I won't get into the specifics of the book's contents because you can view it in the picture gallery below's table of contents.

Reader evaluations are overwhelmingly good, with 78% of people rating it as four or five stars.

After reading Teach Yourself to Play Guitar, I believe that this book would go well with giving someone a guitar as a gift. I would choose the Guitar for Dummies book, which is the second book reviewed below, if I were wanting to spend a little more money or if I was buying a book for myself. It offers both audio and video demos online, and hearing examples of what to play when learning music is helpful. 😉

Hal Leonard Guitar Technique by Greg Koch and Will Schmid

This is arguably the most well-known guitar learning book available, and it now costs about $13.

This Hal Leonard guitar book is actually three books, around fifty pages per, plus three bonus CDs that you can use as a guide while reading each chapter.I would suggest this book to students who are younger than twenty. It is really basic, which is good in some situations but a little monotonous in others.

There is also an excessive amount of sheet music in it. Although it's good that you may practice the lessons from each chapter with these music sheets, I thought that many things in the books were left unanswered. They were presumably attempting to make things as simple as possible, yet this actually exposes gaps in the padawan guitarist's understanding.

The fact that this book emphasizes traditional music notation more than guitar tablature is another drawback I discovered. In my opinion as a guitar instructor, tabs are the closest thing to sliced bread since they greatly simplify the learning process for beginning players. Plus, anything that makes learning the guitar easier is much appreciated, as it is a challenging instrument. However, this is the best course of action if your goal is to learn how to read traditional music notation.

Although every teacher has a different style, the lesson plan is not exactly my jam. It concentrates on theory far too soon, and instead of investing in theoretical studies, I think it's better to start my pupils playing and enjoying themselves so they may grow to love the instrument immediately.
