I am trying to do arithmetic in a Word 2000 table but every time I try, I get
!Invalid Character Setting in the cell where the result of the formula is
supposed to go. I do not find any help for character setting or for error
messages.

Can someone please tell me how to establish valid character setting?

Please reply by e-mail to seao...@aol.com as I do not have regular access to

Hi Sea,

If you press Alt+F9 to display the field codes that are behind the formulas,
what (exactly!) do you see inside the field? (You can copy/paste the inside of
the field into your reply.)

In Control Panel/Regional, you'll find a register tab for numbers. What
list/argument separator is set there?

Problem solved. Many thanks to Cindy for her help. I was mixing up the rows
and columns and specifiying one or the other that did not exist. Why this
should be "invalid character setting" I'm sure I don't know.

Me either. Interesting... Glad you found it!
