Hi - I'm using Word 97 (Office 97 Pro) with the OSR1 patch installed,
under Win95 (OSR2), and my page border bottom is missing when I view
it in 'print preview' (although I *can* see it when
applying/editing/viewing a footer). When I attempt to print the
document Word tells me "The page borders of section 1 are set outside
the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue? (y/n)" If I
print it anyway, the bottom border is left off. I've experimented with
all of the page/border format settings that I can think of, but to no
avail. (Note: when I use exceptionally large borders - i.e. graphics,
etc. - I can just barely see the tops of them at the bottom of the
document.) I've checked Microsoft's knowledge base fairly extensively,
but I can't find anything that specifically addresses this problem.
Any helpful information or suggestions would be very deeply
appreciated. Thanks.

- Mikey

P/S:

I've been able to successfully view/print the same document on other
systems with Office/Word 97, just not my own. If it makes a
difference, my printer is a Canon BJC-4100. (While I saw similar
problems involving HP's addressed in MS' knowledge base, I didn't see
anything that had to do with Canons.) Thanks again.

It sounds like, though it probably isn't (!) exactly what you are being
told - that you have set the margins for your document to be outside the
tolerance of your printer. No printer will print to the very edge of a
page - at work, our Laser Jet 4 printers will print to just over .5cm from
the edge of the paper - close to the edge, but NOT the edge! Goto Page Set
Up and check the measurements you have set for header and footer - I think
it is going to be this that is outside tolerance.

My page margin setup is as follows:

Top: 1.0"
Bottom: 1.0"
Left: 1.25"
Right: 1.25"

Gutter: 0"

Header: 0.5"
Footer: 0.5"

No adjustment I make to these settings (in either direction) corrects the
problem. I've even set the 'border from edge of page' setting (in
borders/shading/page/options) to the maximum that I can -- 31pt -- and that
doesn't help either. (Note: when I view the header/footer, the header looks to
be about 1/2" away from the edge of the page -- *inside* the *top* border --
but the footer starts right *at* the bottom edge of the page -- it actually
overlaps the bottom border.)

First, check the page limits for the Canon printer (unprintable area) by
creating a blank document and setting all the margins (top, left,
bottom, and right) to 0. Click Okay and W97 will object to the margins;
select Fix to find the printer's unprintable area. Some ink jet
printers can only print to 3/4" to 1" from the bottom of the page and
your footer distance from page is .5". I'm not sure if W97 will detect
that on the page layout or not. If not,..

I've had problems with not viewing borders on the page but not the error
message. Although you've probably checked it already, make sure when
you check the page formatting you are checking for section 1 only (if
there's more than one section) and also check the paper size (letter,
not A4) which I've seen happen before also. Next, eliminate a print
driver problem by setting up a new document with a page border, similar
margins, etc. and see if that works. Third, check for hidden drawing
objects towards the bottom of the page (not knowing the document, it's
possible one of the them encroaches on the bottom margin). Finally, it
could be a print driver problem; check the document by setting up a
different printer which prints to File and print it; see if you get the
same message. Finally, as a last resort, reinstall the printer driver
as another printer and see if that works.

Hope this helps.

Mikey,

I tried this out myself and indeed the bottom border is outside the
printable area of most ink jet printers including Epson, HP, and Canon. The
page borders must be set to Distance From Text in order to print correctly
(page leaves bottom border in unprintable area). If your document doesn't
have a footer, adding one with white on white text (if you don't need
anything printed) will push the page border towards the bottom of the page
anyway.
