It's super easy to scan QR codes on your iPhone or iPad, but not everyone is aware of how to do it. If you're not familiar with QR codes and have never had the opportunity to scan one on your device before, rest assured, you've come to the right place.

QR codes have become more popular in the last two years with the pandemic increasing the need for contactless interactions. These two-dimensional barcodes are read by the camera on your device and are often used by shops, websites and locations as a way of communicating or storing information.

They're becoming more common in some restaurants and cafes as rather than printing out paper menus and having to dispose of them each time new customers come in, these eateries can simply get you to scan a QR code and bring the menu up on your device - pretty cool, huh?

If you have one of the best iPhones or best iPads, you'll find it easy to scan QR codes on these because Apple have build a QR code reader into the camera. But, as with all tech software it can take a few minutes to get to grips with this handy tool, which is why we've put together this simple guide on how to scan QR codes on your iPhone or iPad.

But, before we dive into that, we recommend you don't overlook the security risk posed by QR codes. Yes, they can be super handy and there are definitely benefits to using them, but cyber criminals have cottoned on to how powerful they can be and it's worth being aware of how they're seeking to target them.

For those of you who are happy to proceed, let's take a look at how you can scan QR codes on your iPhone or iPad. Oh, and if you're using a device other than one produced by Apple, check out our guide to how to scan QR codes on your Android - we've got you covered there too!

If you want to scan QR codes on your iPhone or iPad, the first step is to open up the camera app on your iPhone or iPad. This can usually be found on the home page, in the bottom right corner of the device, although on iPads it's on the first page and if you've moved it around it'll be somewhere else.

Now, hold the device's camera up to the QR code. No need to hit the shutter button, your iOS device will automatically recognize the QR code and provide you with an on-screen notification. (Make sure you have mobile signal or you're connected to Wi-Fi, otherwise this won't work.)

Tap the notification to be taken to the destination of the QR code. This could be a website, app, or feature of your phone. Remember, you can now change the default browser on your iPhone or iPad, thanks to a relaxation in recent versions of iOS, meaning you'll see a notification to go to Chrome or Safari when scanning.

There's also a built-in QR reader in the Wallet app on iPhone and iPod. To access the scanner, open the app, click on the plus button at the top of the "Passes" section, then tap on Scan Code to Add a Pass.

From here, you can scan QR codes for coupons, boarding passes, tickets, and loyalty cards, but only for the specific things that Wallet considers "passes." If you try to scan any other QR code, you'll get an error message.

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a type of barcode that can store information, such as a special link or webpage. When QR codes are scanned using a smartphone, you can access the information in seconds. On iPhones, you can also long-press on a screenshot to access the QR code. This can be helpful for sending links, making payments, or sharing data. iOS comes with a built-in code reader, so you won't need to download any third-party apps. This wikiHow will show you how to scan a QR code using your iPhone or iPad.

All iPad bundles come with Bluetooth-enabled barcode scanners. To start scanning items, all you need to do is pair your barcode scanner with your iPad. Then, configure it to a certain mode. How to do this varies slightly depending on your bundle.

Because your barcode scanner is pre-paired and pre-configured for you before it's shipped, it shouldn't need any setup. All you need to do is turn on the barcode scanner and open the Retail POS app to connect it. Before using it in your shop for the first time, we also recommend fully charging its battery.

To indicate that it's charging, the battery indicator LED at the top of the barcode scanner blinks amber. Once it's fully charged, the LED turns solid green. If you pick up the scanner from the charging pad and press and hold the scan button (...) for three seconds, the LED will also be solid green.

Socket Mobile's SocketScan S700 User Guide is helpful to have on hand in your shop if you want a paper copy of the Socket Mobile barcodes included in the Help articles. You can also refer to it for more in-depth information about the S700 barcode scanner.

I have purchased a Square Stand/Ipad, I have a chip reader connected to the USB hub and a reciept printer/print driven cash register. I am attempting to add a barcode scanner, and am on my second scanner. My first scanner was a Zebra, but it acted like it had no power when plugged into the Hub, either with other accessories connected or without. Next I purchased a Honeywell Voyager 1200G. I have added it to the Hub and as soon as I do, the stand will disconnect, reconnect, disconnect, reconnect, over and over and over and with each disconnect/reconnect the scanner goes in and out of having power, so its constantly beeping as it turns on and off basically.

Please help, and if the answer is that the scanners are not able to be used, or my brand new stand is malfunctioning or something other than helping me make this work then I will be incredibly frustrated. Sigh.

Did you purchase the Zebra Symbol LS2208 from the Square website? It is a very reliable barcode scanner from my experience. If so, I would temporarily plug it into a computer and see if it is working there.

You have already updated the iPad and app, so you're good there. I would do a force restart on the iPad, it tends to clear the memory better: -restart-ipad-ipad9955c007/ipados#::text=Press%20and%20ho....

Since iOS 14.2 we have a problem with the in camera QR code scanner. The square shows up but the pop up with the link does not. Also the scanner is not available in settings>control centre so we cannot add it to the control centre as an icon.

I think both problems are related and I am pretty sure it has something to do with our Jamf School environment as I have no problems with my personal (Identical type) iPad. Unfortunately I can't find anything in the restricions and there does not seem to be an QR code build in application which needs to be added to the whitelist. Nonethless it seems blocked somehow.

Same problem here - Frederic, did you find any solutions yet? The cameras on our iPads recognize the QR code (they show the border/frame around the image) but no action is taken to offer opening up Safari. I don't see anything in the profile restriction settings in Jamf.

i have some iPads (5th gen) with iOS 14.2, on those i don't have this issue. i can add (control center) and access the qr scanner and get the scanner in the camera app directly with link direct. I know there are some issues related only to newer iPad generations.

FCervini The only management setting that concerns the camera is whether to allow its use or not. Similarly the only management change(not setting) for control centre that affects it's state is if the device is in Shared iPad Mode. Aside from those two no other mdm configurations limit your use of the QR code scanner. I've tested it in our environment on iPads from 7th gen on down to Air 2's.

What I have noticed so far:

- iOS devices prior to version 14 do not have the problem.

- In version 13.4.x or earlier, some iPads have the QR scanner control in the control centre list, others do not.. I can't find a reason yet why some of them have the option and others do not. (EDIT: This is due the Safelist Profile. See beneath)

- When I upgrade to version 14.4 the QR scanner dissapears from the control centre list (If it was visible in the first place) with one exception so far. One iPad mini 5th gen kept the control and after the update the QR code scanner still works. I am not sure what is different as they all share the same restrictions and DEP profile. I need to investigate this one more.

- Turning the QR-code scanner off and back on in the camera settings does not remedy the problem.

- Rebooting the iPad does not remedy the problem.

- Turning the QR scnanner off in the camera settings, then a reboot and turning it back on does not remedy the problem.

- I haven't tried a full reset yet. Probably need to try it if I can't find any other solution. (EDIT: Reset All Settings did not work).

Status update:

I think I am getting closer in solving this issue. The QR-code scanner is affected when using "Safelist and Blocklist" in a profile. As soon as I apply a Safelist profile, the QR-code scanner dissapears in the conctrol centre. The Safelist does not feature a QR-code scanner option so there is no way to turn it on.

Safelists are the bread and butter of managing apps which I use extensively. I really hope there is an option to keep the QR-code scanner active with Safelists. Does anyone have a suggestion to bypass this or do we need to ask Jamf to fix this for us?

FCervini See my edit below that. I went into my instance of School and didn't see a bundle id input anywhere. Your only options are to try a profile on a test iPad that was created in Profile Creator. The better, less tinkering type of solution, if you can call it a solution, is to submit feedback or a support request to get the OR code scanner added to the built in apps list.

EDIT: Still noticing some other odd behavior: I have iPads where the link pop up doesn't appear in the photo app (scan QR-codes is activated in the settings) even if the scanner is available in control centre (and works there). I have to figure out what the difference is.
