Office '97 version of WORD.
I have a header that is a table. The body of the document is also a
table. I want the header table to be immediately above the table in the
body of the document (as if they were one table). I've tried adjusting
the margin using the ruler on the left of the document but no success.
There's always a gap between the header table and the table starting the
body of my document. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks.

The problem is that Word requires an empty paragraph after the table you put
in the header. You can get around that, however, by drawing a text box the
size of the header pane, setting the inside margins to 0", and then
inserting a table in the text box. You can drag the table border to
completely fill the text box, leaving no gap between header and text body.
In my experiments, this requires a lot of tweaking if you're using borders,
to get them aligned perfectly, but it IS possible.

Hi Suzanne and Kevin,

I knew Suzanne would have a clever solution for this problem. Nice going
Suzanne. Now I have to ask: What are you trying to accomplish, Kevin? Have
you ruled out the Headings command on the Table menu?

I call my problem a double-headings problem. I need to repeat the table in the
header on EACH page. Then, in the body of the document, I have another table
that has headings that only repeat when the respective section repeats.
Suzanne's solution will work for me once I tweak it accordingly. Thanks.

The document's header table, as I said, is on each page. The body of the
document has another table with sections some of which will be on only one page
with a "headings" and some of which will be on more than one page with the
respective "headings" repeating themselves.

Not sure if I'm making myself clear. If you're still curious I could attach the
*.doc file. But, Suzanne's solution will do the trick.

Hi Kevin,

No need to send a file. Your description seems clear. Sounds like an
interesting problem and a creative solution.

Hi Kevin,

If you format the paragraph mark after the table so that there is no space
after it and so that the line spacing in the paragraph is set to exactly 1pt
(the minimum that Word will allow, then adjust the size of the header pane
to the minimum (by dragging on the vertical ruler), you will probably
achieve something that is near enough to what you are after. In page layout
view, the space between the table in the header and the table in the body of
the document is still noticeable, but, on a 300dpi printer, rather than a
space between the two, there is a hardly noticeable thickening of the border
between the two.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

[Word 2013)

as there is always a paragraph mark behind a table you can format that empty
paragraph mark as "hidden". So it will no longer appear in print preview,
and no space will be printed.
Alternative, you can set a negative measure for the top margin. Example:

The header starts at 1,5 cm (Page Setup | Layout | From edge).
The hight of header table is exactly 0,5 cm (Table Tools | Layout |
Properties | Row).
The top margin has to be -2,0 cm (Page Setup | Margins | Top).
