Is it possible to hide a column or row in a Word table?
If so, how?

No, not the way you can in Excel.

But you could link the Excel table, which is almost certainly better than
trying to do complex calculations in a Word table.

I don't know Excel at all, but you can format rows as "hidden" (Format >
Font).
This doesn't work for columns, though.

Create the table in Excel with the calculations you require then copy the
Excel table to the clipboard and paste special in HTML format as a link. The
Excel table will appear in the Word document. If you set the formatting in
Excel to match what you had in Word, you will not see any difference. With
both documents open, any changes you make in Excel will be reflected in
Word.
