Hello,

I have an english version of MSOffice 2000. For some odd reason it cannot
perform spellcheck in danish or german (some files cannot be found).

Whats wrong, and how do I fix it?

Thanks

Ulrik

Although Word supports some 30+ languages, you don't get all the proofing
tools with a local version of Word. English Word has English, Spanish and
French, for example.

You need to purchase the Proofing Tools CD for Office 2000. Many retailers
won't have this, anymore, since the current version is now XP. You'll have
to do some asking around. But it is still available from Microsoft. US and
Canadian residents can purchase it from Microsoft's online store.

Cindy,
I have a related question. I have the Proofing Tools and
I can sometimes check spelling in German but the language
suddenly reverts to English while I am checking and then I
can only check a word at a time. I change the language in
the dictionary window to German - it checks one word - and
then it reverts to English. I have gone to Tools -
Language and set German as the default language for this
template and it still reverts instantly to English in the
spelling checker. I paid good money for the proofing
tools and when they work I am happy with them. There is
nothing helpful in the Help window (as usual) and I have a
lot of German to check. Can you help me?
Thanks
Ed

Yikes! Which version of Word and Windows are we dealing with,
here?

Some trouble-shooting questions/suggestions
1) Turn OFF the automatic language recognition.
2) Make absolutely certain that the default language in your
Windows is the same as the default language for Word (not
just the template you're connected with, unless it's
Normal.dot). I can tell you better how to do this once I know
which Windows you have :-)

Cindy,
I am using the Word in Office 2000 and the Proofing Tools
for Office 2000. I am using Windows Me. If your products
are truly international they shouldn't require me to
change the country on Windows. I have the US
International keyboard set up. I write both in English
and German. I did have the automatic language recognition
on, I"ll try it with it off. I also set German as the
default language even though it changed the template. I
just wish the commands would do what they appear to do.
Thanks again,
Ed

Whoa :-)! I don't belong to Microsoft; t'ain't "my product".
Wish it were, 'cause *I* sure wouldn't have programmed it
like this! I been screaming about this since it was
introduced in Word97. But to no avail. Apparently the
customers with all the money (read corporate IT, who have no
idea what Word is supposed to be) want to be able to control
things. Set "our" language in Windows, and Word should
conform. <blech>

Same here. US as well as UK English. German-German as well as
Swiss German. And sometimes French. So I have at least five
dialects to keep straight :-)

OK, here's (more or less) what you need to do.
1) You want German as your default language, so set that in
Windows
2) Click on "Properties" (or some other button - I "skipped"
Windows ME) to choose your keyboard layout. (Yes, that's
right, layout does not have to match language)
3) Find your Normal.dot template and rename it
4) Start up Word and set your default language here to
*exactly* the same one you set in Windows (IOW, don't try to
mix dialects, either)

From this point on, Word will accept and recognize the
languages as you've defined them in your styles. And with
"automatic detection" off, the switching between languages
should settle down. A bit.

There's still some weirdness where WINDOWS will change it's
"input language", and Word will almost immediately apply that
change to the current selection. It's PITA, and as far as I
know, MS hasn't been able to track down the cause, yet. I see
it happen most often when I open, say, an English-language
software when I want the Windows input language to be German.

So, as a rule, I tend to keep my input languages English, and
rely on styles in my templates for language formatting...

Dear Cindy,
Thanks much and pardon my remarks. I spend a lot of time
angry at Microsoft, so it only takes a little to set me
off. Also I read the snippy reply to the same original
query in the "International Features" and that put me on
edge too. I should remember the majority of us are in
this together. I won't have a chance to try all this out
for a week or so, but I appreciate your time and effort.
THanks again,
Ed

I missed that. Don't see anything from you in that group,
as a matter of fact. Guess I'd better reset it...
