Spell check was not working on one of our user's
workstations and we found that when we went to Tool ->
Options, the Spelling & Grammar tab was greyed out.

Is there a way to re-enable this option?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chances are the Proofing Tools have been deleted. Reinstall them using
Office Setup.

If that doesn't work, please report which files are in the folder \Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

Ihave a similar problem in Office word 97, the grammer is
activated but spelling is grayed, "Always suggest
correction" is checked, also same problem in Outlook 5.5
along with cut & copy buttons greyed.

I had to wipe HD due to virus that go through. Full
reinstall and that's when this started. Tried to reinstall
Word again and no fix.
Thanks,
Kevin

I'm having the same problem w/ Win XP and Office 97.
Proofing tools are definitely installed, but only work if
logged in as administrator. Does not work for Domain User.

I just posted that I'm having same problem w/ Domain
Users. Incorrectly stated that workstation is Win XP.
It's actually Win 2k w/ Office 97. Also, forgot to answer
questions in previous post. Here are the files in Proof
directory:

1033 folder w/ msgr2en.dll
mscreate.dir, DLL's: chapi3t1, csapi3t1, ctapi3t2,
msgren32, mshy32, mslid, mssp232, msspell3, msthenb,
msthes3, LEX's: msgr_en, msgr2en, mshy_en, mssp2_en,
mssp3en, mssp3ena, msth3am, msth3br, msthbbr, msthbus,
mswds_en.

Thanks.

In my environment I just solved what may be the same problem to which
you allude in your post.

It seems that Office97 products under Windows2000 Pro require a little
post-installation configuration in order to work for non-administrative
users.

a) I'm going to presume the files you were asked to confirm are
present.

b) If so, try logging onto the Win2000 machine in question as
administrator (or equivalent), fire up Word97 and check whether the
Spell & Grammar Check menu choice is greyed out. (If it is disabled,
read no further because the solution below may not apply to your
situation.)

If the item is active for administrator but not one of your users, then
your difficulty is permissions-based at the level of your registry.
Check out MS Knowledge Base article #257643 (I found this using the
keywords: tools spell check gray). I've included it below:

::KNOWLEDGE BASE::

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to use the spelling or grammar features in Microsoft
Word 97, nothing happens and you do not receive an error message. Also,
all of the options on the Spelling and Grammar tabs in the Tools dialog
box are unavailable (dimmed). (To view the Spelling and Grammar tabs,
click Options on the Tools menu.)

CAUSE
This problem occurs with users who are members of the local Users group
if the Users group does not have sufficient permissions to the
following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Spelling

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Grammar

RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from
using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.

NOTE: You must be an administrator or have administrative rights to
perform this procedure.

To correct this problem, use the appropriate steps to set up sufficient
permissions on your version of Windows:
Windows 2000
Quit Word. Quit Microsoft Outlook if you are using Word as your e-mail
editor.
Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type Regedt32.exe and
then click OK.
Select the first registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Spelling

On the Security menu, click Permissions.
Click Advanced.
In the Permissions Entries box, click the Users group, and then click
the View/Edit button.
Click to select the Allow check box for the Set Value and Create
Subkeys permissions.
Click OK twice.
Repeat steps 3 through 8 for the second registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Grammar

Quit Registry Editor.
Windows XP
Quit Word. Quit Microsoft Outlook if you are using Word as your e-mail
editor.
Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type Regedt32.exe and
then click OK.
Select the first registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Spelling

On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
Click Advanced.
In the Permissions Entries box, click the Users group, and then click
the View/Edit button.
Click to select the Allow check box for the Set Value and Create
Subkeys permissions.
Click OK twice.
Repeat steps 3 through 8 for the second registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Grammar

Quit Registry Editor.
The Spelling and Grammar features will be available (not dimmed) and
will work as expected the next time that you start Word.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft
products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
