Windows 7
Office 2007

Display language settings:
Format: English (Australia)
Location: Australia
Administrative Language for non-Unicode: English (Australia)

Office 2007 Language settings
Enabled editing languages: English (Australia); English (United States)

Tried removing the latter but it reappears when settings are re-opened
(suspect this is a required dictionary that cannot be removed).

Open Word. Open new document.
Status bar correctly shows English (Australia).

Type 'mesmerise' and 'mesmerize' . Word does not flag either as incorrect.
How do I get Word to correctly mark 'mesmerize' as incorrect?

Mesmerize isn't incorrect. I believe that the Australian English spell
checker is based on the Macquarie Dictionary (adopted by Australian schools,
businesses, and courts as their standard dictionary), which allows both
spellings, and many educated Australians actually prefer -ize endings (which
are etymologically more correct), as does the Oxford English Dictionary.

If you want to exclude such spellings, you can create an exclusion
dictionary; see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/ExcludeWordFromDic.htm

Without no wishing to appear argumentative or spark a debate:
- I was educated in an Australian school where I leaned (in most instances)
words containing 'ize' are mostly incorrect and that the correct spelling is
the 'ise'. My aging, well-worn copy of the purchased-at-Aussie-school
Macquarie Dictionary does not contain words with 'ize' variation.

- Check University of Sydney reference to 'spelling'

-
http://www.usyd.edu.au/digital_print_media/style_guides/preferred_spellings/index.shtml

- Typing the same words in my Windows XP, Word 2003 system results in
'mesmerize' being marked for correction.

I am aware it is possible to exclude words however, I have no desire to try
to remember all the variations between dictionary systems.

Chatting to high school teachers, standards have dropped since I did my
ABCs. Macquarie dictionary standard for Australia is 'ise' but in high
schools, either is now acceptable However, as the discussion was not
official advice, do not quote me. The Department of Education and Training
may have a very different view to its employees. My question, "what about
consistency" produced agreement that consistency is very important but
produced blank looks in regard to how it is checked. Word-enforced
consistency is not possible when its dictionary accepts 'ize' or 'ise' as
correct.

Might there be a VBA solution? Even killing a few hours looping though every
word in the inbuilt dictionary and prompt for exclude if the word contains
'ize' is better than the current acceptance of either choice. Other
variations (program/programme etc.) will be findable in a list somewhere
and can wait.
