Have a bizarre problem that has also been seen on three other machines
running Word 2000. Each with different hp deskjets. (693C, 1120C, and 970C)
Am able to change to a listed font in Word (CityBlueprint in this case) and
type away. But, then many "tools" within Word fail to work. For example,
word wrapping no longer works correctly. That is, a soft carriage return is
inserted whenever the end of the line occurs, whether it's in the center of
a word or not. No spaces are shown when I select show/hide formatting
symbols, spell checking does not find purposefully misspelled words. And
other "what's going on here" type problems that indicate that Word is acting
more like Notepad.
Paragraph formatting, font size, color and spacing seem to all function
okay.
Now, if I try to change the font back to some other basic font like Arial,
Times New Roman, Courier, etc. every character is displayed as a blank box.
(Huh?! what is this?) And if I format a new section with some basic font and
type away all works as expected, but if I then change to some certain fonts
(CityBlueprint among them) the text is changed apporiately (letters map to
the right letters) but then I lose many of Word's basic tools and I again
cannot change back to the basic fonts!
Now, apparently CityBlueprint, and many others, are actually symbol fonts so
Word does not deal with them as a regular font. But, it is listed as a
TrueType font in the font folder. And these symbol fonts all show up in the
available font list as well as the "symbol" font lists.
My question is what is up with this? How can I recover my pages of text?
Why does Word even allow me to do such a thing? Is it possible to stop this
from happening? That is, I want to insure that the fonts listed in the
available font list will only be ones that Word will spell check, etc. Can I
do this. I would very much appreciate any help offered.
This seems to be the only newsgroup dealing with font problems so please
tell me if I should try to repost in some other group.
This happens if the font you select is a symbol rather than a text font. See
Microsoft Knoledge Base article Q212396.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q212/3/96.ASP
or send a blank e-mail to mshelp@microsoft with Q212396 alone on the Subject
line.
The behaviour you see regarding line breaks, spell checking, &c is
appropriate for fonts that do not form text.\, "symbol fonts". The MSKB
article details a fix/workaround.
Let us know how it goes.
