Margin formatting is by section.

I suspect there is a question you want to ask, but you haven't asked it.

Question 1: Is this normal behaviour?
1. Page Setup shows Right Margin 2 cm
2. Actual page shows Right Margin 4.5 cm
3. Can't change Right Margin
Question 2: Why is the Right Margin so big?
Question 3: How do I change the actual page so that it displays a Right
Margin 2 cm?

Basic_Formatting.htm tells me to change the Right Margin by using Page Setup
and the Margin tab. But when I go there and try to change it, I get the error
message "Increasing right margin causes last column to become too narrow..."
Question 4: Have I got some kind of funky setting that causes this 2 cm
margin to appear as 4.5 cm?

Best Regards,
D.Smith

If this is Word 2002 or 2003, the "funky setting" is Track Changes. When
you're tracking changes, Word expands the virtual page to allow for the
"balloons." If you print the page it will be either shrunk to fit on
portrait or rotated to landscape depending on your settings on the Track
Changes tab of Tools | Options.

Nope, sorry. It's not Track Changes.

I'm using Word 2003 11.5604.5606. This happens when I open a new document.
Untouched. No content.

I am familiar with how Track Changes shows balloons on the right side. I
know I can get rid of all by accepting all changes. Track Changes is off.

In Tools > Options I can set Track Changes to "never" and the margin is
still 4.5 cm.

BTW, I work around this issue by opening an old Word file, one that displays
correct margins in both Page Setup and onscreen. I just want to know what's
up with a new document. Any suggestions?

Thanks to Suzanne for pointing me at Normal.dot. However this was not the
solution.

Here's what I did:
1. I changed the Macro Security level to medium.
2. When I started MS Word, it announced a document template that was to be
opened. I had no idea that it was there. It was installed when I set up an
application for my Palm PDA. The name of the template was Palmapp.dot.
3. Its location was another new wrinkle that I discovered: c:\program
files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Startup. Apparently, this is a folder where I
can store a template for frequent use.
4. I removed Palmapp.dot from the startup folder and put it into the
Templates folder with Normal.dot. Now things are behaving normally.

The Word and Office Startup folders are (as the name suggests) folders where
Word and other Office applications look when they are starting up. Any
template or add-in stored in either of these folders will be loaded when you
start Word. Palmapp.dot is a notorious troublemaker. If you don't have any
real use for it, I wouldn't even give it space in your user templates
folder, but if you do sometimes need it, then you can load it from there as
needed (but as an add-in, not a document template).

c:\program files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Startup is, as its name implies,
a folder the contents of which are loaded when Office 2003 applications are
started. The startup folder for Word alone is defined in tools > options >
file locations >startup. Startup folders are used by Word to load global
templates which provide macros, toolbars etc for use by all documents.

By removing the Palmapp.dot add-in from this folder, you prevent it from
loading and thus lose the functionality it provides. Whether the add-in is
suitable for your version of Word or you require its functionality are other
issues entirely.

You can set Word's security to trust installed templates and add-ins.

I don't know why but my Word 2003 is causing me problems with the page
setup and layout. Every time I try to change the right margins, or
adjust a document from portrait to landscape layout, I get an error
says "increasing right margins cause last column to be unevenly
spaced"
I have erased normal.dot and hoped that would solve things but still
get the error each time. Please help.
Thanks

Go to Format | Columns and check the box for "Equal column spacing."
