The TOC does not indent heading level

Using the outline view mode in Word 2007, the various levels were not
indenting properly so I would set them with a right click and "Change List
Level." Why do I have to do this?

And, now, when I'm trying to generate a table of contents with the automatic
buttons under the Reference tab, the TOC comes into the document with no
indenting of the various heading levels.

If you are using the built-in headings, Outline view will work
properly. If not, you'd have to define the heading levels yourself
(either by directly applying them to paragraphs or by defining custom
styles).

The formatting of the TOC is determined by the TOC styles. Modify
their indents as desired. See

In Word 2007, I created my styles and format in the TOC. I modified the TOC
to indent the second heading, however, it insists on providing no indentation

As we come up on MS Word's 2nd quarter-century on the market, we can only
hope that Da Boyz figure out how to make Outlining work seamlessly and
without major corruption happening more often than not. The answer I
received, above, was what I would expect from Word documentation. In other
words, no help at all.

I'm a writer that thinks in outline format as a piece is created. It is
very important that outlining work well and quickly. It doesn't. But,
nothing new ...

I bought a copy of Word 1.0 (20-25 years ago?) and have had every upgrade
since. None of them had an Outliner that worked.

You're saying you added an indent to the TOC 2 style, and this indent does
not show up in the TOC? Note that changes you make in the TOC styles will
not affect the headings themselves, and vice versa.
