Word 2000: If I select Tools, Envelopes & labels, Labels(tab), Options,
choose any address label (e.g. J8159 in A4 labels), OK, New Document, I
successfully get a page of labels displayed, with gey borders etc. So far so
good.

But the left indent is too small and the print is on the very edge of the
labels when printed.

I can move the "First Line Indent" and "Hanging Indent" markers on the ruler
to change this to what I want but my question is:-

"How do I change the label template so that the indents are automatically
set to what I want when I open a new label document instead of having to
manually change them everytime?" "Where are the templates for labels? I have
searched my whole system for .dot files and I can't see anything that looks
like the templates for labels"

Grateful if anyone can pint me in the right direction.

Thanks

There are no templates per se, just label definitions, which are stored
internally, except for custom ones, which are stored in the Windows
Registry. Many of the label definitions do have a paragraph indent, but I
don't think this is user-customizable. You can, however, create a template
for any specific label size from your New Document. Just change the left
indent as needed and save the document (without content) as a template.

Word doesn't use templates for labels. It uses in-built tools to create a
table that matches the chosen label format.
By default Word uses the normal paragraph style to format labels, but you
can apply any style you want. You could save the formatted 'new document' as
a template for single pages of labels and mail merge, albeit not through the
envelope/label tool.

Thankyou both (Suzanne and Graham) for your replies, they were both very
useful.

One further question although this may be TOO difficult, Suzanne says the
Custom Labels are defined in the registry and I have found the entries but
they are BINARY keys. Is there any way to decode these keys so that I can
change the indents on a Custom label (e.g. if byte 25 defines the indent I
could change it from 02 to 05 or something)

You can use the label editor in the envelope/label wizard to modify the
layout.

Um, how?

I want to change the FirstLineIndent and HangingIndent of the text in the
labels, not the actual label size/characteristics.

Or do you mean I can achieve the same effect by increasing the SideMargin
whilst decreasing the LabelWidth at the same time.

Cheers

Yes you could do that. Word neither knows nor cares what the label sheet
looks like. It positions the text according to the layout of the label table
format.

I don't see why you need to do this. You can apply whatever style formatting
you like to the table in Word - either by creating a new document from the
label wizard, or by using mail merge and formatting the label as you wish
before propagating. http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_labels_with_word_xp.htm

Or you could create a label template to select from file > new with the
default styles set to position the text where you want.
