Template Letterhead - File Size Too Big

I am trying to setup our company letterhead in Word 2002. I would like our
logo in the header with some text and a partner logo in the footer with some
text.

Everything is working fine except the file size is a little too big. Using
EPS files, the blank letterhead is 285k. Using WMF files, the blank
letterhead falls to 150k. Since we are planning to create 200+ letters per
month (at least), shrinking the template would save disk space and minimize
the amount data transferred during synchronization.

I wouldn't mind using GIF or BMP, but I can't figure out how make the EPS
file just the right size before converting. I tried the obvious ruler
approach, but it's not working well. When I try to re-size the GIF/BMP
image in Word, it gets fuzzy.

What is the best way for me to get my logo on the letterhead without using
one of the bloated formats? Any useful utilities out there?

TIA

Link the graphics in the template. They'll then be linked in the letters
based on the template, which will greatly reduce the file size of all. Just
make sure that Word gets the path right. If you insert a linked graphic
before saving the template for the first time, Word is forced to use an
absolute path. If you save the template first, Word may use a relative path,
which will then be wrong in the docs.

Thanks for the info.

What will happen when I email the letterhead to a client? Will the logos be
included or still try to reference the path?

No, if the graphics are linked, the client will not see them. But you can
get around this by selecting the graphic and pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9, which
will unlink the field and cause the graphic to be embedded.

Insert | Picture | From File. Select the graphic, press the arrow beside
Insert, and choose Link to File.

what is the purpose of link the graphic? Does that mean
you don't actually see the graphic until you print?

No, you will see the graphic just as if it were embedded, but it won't be
saved with the document. Why don't you just try it and see?
