I would think that one way would be to control the MARGINS and make them the
right size top and bottom. That should take care of the right number of
lines per page. Then adjust the margins left and right to control number of
characters per line. I think you will need to use a fixed width font such
as courier new.

You probably also need to use Exact line spacing. If top and bottom margins
are also prescribed, divide the number of lines by the number of measurement
units (let's say inches) available. Say you have 1" top and bottom margins
on an 11" page, so 9" of document area. To make the math easy, let's say you
need 27 lines per page, or three lines per inch (coincidentally, this
exactly equals double spacing on a typewriter). There are 72 points per
inch, so set line spacing to Exactly 24 pts. Note that "Double" will NOT
give you this spacing unless you are using 10-pt type.

Question...when I use the settings as you have discussed above, particularly
the margin settings, and I save the file as a text only(.txt) file, when I
open it back up, the margins have been reset. How do I get these to be held
across multiple openings? Thanks!

Hi Christopher

Do all your editing in a Word version, save as text whenever you edit the
Word version.

Dave

Let me see if I understand you. First save it as a Word document and then
when I edit it, save it as a text file? That won't work, will it? It will
cause a dialog box which says that I will lose formatting.

Hi Christopher

Why does the dialog box matter (you can just click "No")? If it is a text
file it has no page setup. If you open a text file in Word, Word applies its
default page setup to it, but the page setup is not stored in the file. If
you want to apply a different page setup to it than the default one you have
to save it in Word document format. You presumably created this file using
Word in the first place, or have I misundertood?

Regards

Dave
