A Certain Ratio: The Early Years of Post-Punk Funk
A Certain Ratio (ACR) are one of the most influential bands in the history of post-punk and alternative music. Formed in 1977 in Manchester, England, they were among the first acts to sign with the legendary Factory Records label, home of Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays. ACR combined punk energy, funk rhythms, dub production, and experimental sounds to create a unique and groundbreaking style that influenced generations of musicians.
Their early singles and EPs, collected on the compilation album Early, showcase their evolution from a raw and angular post-punk band to a sophisticated and funky outfit that incorporated horns, keyboards, and percussion. Songs like "Do the Du", "Flight", "Waterline", and "Shack Up" are classics of the genre, blending infectious grooves, catchy melodies, and dark lyrics. After releasing their fourth studio album I'd Like to See You Again in 1982, ACR went through some changes in their line-up and sound. They added Andy Connell on keyboards and Tony Quigley on saxophone, and experimented with Latin, jazz, and pop influences. They also collaborated with singer Denise Johnson, who provided vocals on some of their songs. Their fifth album Force, released in 1986, was their last one for Factory Records, as they moved to A&M Records in 1989.
On A&M, ACR released two more albums: Good Together and acr:mcr, which featured more polished and accessible songs, but also alienated some of their old fans. The band then signed with Rob's Records, a label founded by their former manager Rob Gretton, and released Up in Downsville in 1992 and Change the Station in 1997. These albums saw ACR return to their funk and dub roots, but also incorporate elements of house and techno.
The band went on hiatus after the death of Rob Gretton in 1999, but reformed in 2008 to release their ninth studio album Mind Made Up, which was only available in France. They also started to perform live again, playing at festivals and clubs around the world. In 2018, they signed with Mute Records and released a compilation album called acr:set, which featured new versions of some of their classic songs. In 2020, they released their tenth studio album ACR Loco, which received critical acclaim and reached number 69 on the UK Albums Chart.
In addition to their studio albums, ACR have also released several live albums, remix albums, EPs, and singles over the years. They have also been covered and remixed by artists such as Happy Mondays, The Charlatans, Electronic, Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, and Fila Brazillia. ACR are widely regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of post-punk and alternative music, and have been praised by musicians such as Thom Yorke, James Murphy, Bernard Sumner, and Johnny Marr.
