see attached gif file.
i need to create a letterhead where the company information sits along the
left margin as a column (i guess) and the letter would appear in the larger
second column. i can create this as one page, but what i really need is a
template that works on multipage documents. also, this needs to be user
friendly, i don't want to confuse people with a bunch of directions on how
to write a simple letter. email me direct.
thanks in advance,

Position the graphic in a textbox in the header of the document, this way
you won't need a table inside the document where users need to type their
text. For a textbox you can specifically define where it should be on the
page.
Hope this helps,
regards,
Astrid

There are various ways of doing this; some may be better, but
(assuming Word 97) this will work:
Place the cursor in page one's header and create a text box occupying
the left-hand area where the letterhead stuff is to go. Put the
letterhead in that. Set the text box's wrapping to "square" or
"tight".
If you only want the letterhead stuff on the first page, place a page
break in the body text area on page one. Now go to File->Page
setup->Layout->Headers and Footers and check 'Different first page'.
Go to the header on page 2, and delete the text box. Now delete the
page break.
Save the document as a template ("Letter.dot", or whatever).

Anything anchored to the header paragraph is treated as part of the header
regardless of where it appears on the page. So you can set normal margins
for your letter (whatever you want them to be on the second and subsequent
pages), then, while in the header pane, draw a text box down the side of the
page. This can be empty if you're using preprinted stationery, or you can
put your graphic and textual material in it (and of course you can use more
than one text box as needed). In the Format Text Box dialog, on the Wrapping
tab, set the wrapping to Square and Right. Set the distance from text as
needed (0" if you're using an empty text box as an artificial margin, a bit
more if you want the text offset from the contents of the text box). You
will not need to change the margins of your body text styles; they will
accommodate the text box.
Since you're putting this text box on just the first page and don't want it
to repeat on every page (which is the reason for anchoring a text box or
graphic to the header paragraph in many instances), why put it in the
header? Because when you do that it becomes inaccessible except when the
header is selected. This makes it harder for users to accidentally type in
the text box, or move it, when they're attempting to type in the body of the
letter.
If this is not clear, or you have further questions, please post back here.
