I use Word 2000. In a template I recently created, I placed a horizontal
line (using Format, Borders and Shading, Horizontal Line) underneath an
address. I would like to decrease the amount of space between the horizontal
line and the bottom of the text. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks.

If you added your line via the Format-Borders & Shading
command, then you should click the Options button; then
you can specify space above/below/left/right of all
borders. If you used an underscore instead, then try using
Format-Borders and Shading and select Text under Apply to.

Thanks, Robin. Well, maybe I should rephrase the question: What is the best
way to create horizontal lines in Word 2000? I often want the line to be
less than the entire width of the page, and (as from my earlier post) like
the line to be closer to the preceding text. It seems as though you can't do
this with borders. Many thanks.

Hi, Ross,

Here's some light reading for you:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/Borders.htm
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm

The "best" way to create lines varies with their purpose: are they for
filling in, signing on, or otherwise "useful"; are they meant to emphasize
some text or other element, are they decorative? Do they need to move with a
specific word or paragraph as the document is edited? Should they occur on
every page? Is this a document for one-time use, or is it going to be
maintained and altered over time? Each of these has a different "best" way.

And if the line you added is a drawing line, go to Format AutoShape and
change the position of the line (Relative to Paragraph) to a smaller
measurement.

Although from the dialog it appears that you can add a border to selected
text the same way you can paragraphs, table cells, etc., in fact you can
only create a box around all four sides. This feature covertly uses the EQ
\x (box) field, which you can explicitly choose from Insert Field, where you
can also add switches that allow you to apply the box to any one, two, or
three of the sides.
