My header area is too large, pushing my document text to the center of the page,
way below the top margin. I have even tried deleting the text in the header
completely, but I have no luck correcting the problem. Any ideas?

Sometimes although it appears that the problem is a large header, what's
really happening is that the vertical justification (File | Page Setup |
Layout) has been set to Center.

I've also seen documents where a frame in the header grew to fill the whole
page. It may have started out as the frame around a page number inserted
using Insert | Page Numbers..., or it may have resulted from sort sort of
document corruption. If this IS the problem, though, you might try clicking
in the header and seeing if Frame is available on the Format menu. If so,
select it and in the Frame dialog press the button for Remove Frame. This is
unlikely in your case, though, since the frame is set to Auto size and so
shouldn't grow if it contains no text.

Is there some way available to directly control the size of headers and
footers (in Word 2000)? That is, specify an inch-and-a-half header, for
example. I have found the setting that controls the distance of a
header/footer from the edge of the page, but nothing about the size.

Thanks...

Ordinarily a header will not be bigger than the text you put in it, but
there IS a way to limit the size of the header by entering a negative
measurement for the top margin. The MSKB article "WD: General Information
About Headers and Footers [Q187355]," says:

How Headers and Footers Affect Margin Settings
----------------------------------------------

Word prints headers and footers in the top and bottom margins. If the header
or footer is too large to fit in the margin, Word adjusts the top and bottom
margin to accommodate the header or footer. That is, if the header or footer
becomes too large to fit in the margin, it will start expanding downward
(for the header) and upward (for the footer), reducing the amount of
document text that can be displayed in the document window.

To prevent Word from moving the main document text (downward or upward) when
the header or footer gets too large to fit in the margin, follow these
steps:

1. On the File menu, click Page Setup (Windows) or Document Layout
(Macintosh 6.x).

2. Click the Margins tab.

3. In Word for Windows, type a hyphen (-) before the Top or Bottom margin
setting. Or, in Word for Macintosh version 6.x, select the Exactly option
beside the Top or Bottom measurements.

Interesting... I didn't know about that Suzanne. Gives us just a
little bit more control. Thanks...

What worked for me was to remove the styling from the footer. It seemed something was causing the footer to stretch.
