I'm trying to print on paper that is 5.5" x 8.5" and Word
2000 insists on setting the page up as "Booklet on Letter."
The paper size is the most commonly used size for
dayplanners like FranklinCovey (which I've got) and
DayTimer. I used to be able to do this in Word 97 and can
still do in Excel 2000.

I've tried being clever by making setting the margins to
4.75" x 8.5" (which would leave a left margin of .75" to
accomodate the side holes) but this doesn't result in any
better results because the software insists that the margins
are set outside of the printable area of the page and I
still have problems.

I greatly appreciate any help anyone can give.

I just cut some 8.5"x11" paper in two to use as sheets. Then I went into
page setup/paper size and chose custom. I put 5.5 in width and 8.5 in length
and printed it out in portrait mode. It seemed to work fine for me. I am
using Word 2000 also. Don't know if I am understanding your problem or not

Hi all,

This smells like a printer driver problem. Does the standard printer you
have installed under Windows support half USLetter? If not, then Word
takes the nearest format.

I have exactly the same problem whenever I try a page setup for custom paper
sizes in W2000. As soon as I change the paper size a few mm from one of the
standard sizes and make a custom paper format I get the dreaded "margins are
set outside of the printable area of the page" message when I print. If I
ignore the message it still prints OK, but I always get this stupid error
message. My printer is a HP laserjet 4L. Never had a problem in earlier
versions of Word with the same custom paper sizes. What is going on?
