I cannot modify the style of heading 5 as such that the numbering fits to
the current chapter e.g. previous level 4 heading number was 3.2.4.5 then
heading 5 starts with 1.1.1.1.1. The parameter in the window "Bullets and
Numbering" is set to restart numbering and shaded in gray => I'm not allowed
to change it to "Continue previous list". This works fine for the other
headings, e.g. heading 1,2,3 and 4 but not for heading 5.
Is anyone able to help me?.

Kind Regards,

Werner Kipfer

Make sure you have your outline numbering set up *exactly* as described in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

Dear Suzanne

Many thanks for your answer.
I followed exactly the instructions given on the webpage sent by you (e.g.
cascading the headings), but still have the same problem. I do get different
outline numbered formatting to choose from, when I want to modify heading 5.

Werner

Be sure that when you want to modify the numbering of Heading 5 you go in
through Format | Style: Heading 1.

I don't know exactly what you mean by that. Do mean when I modify the
formating of Heading 5 that I click on the Format pull down menu in the
dialog window and then choose Numbering?

Kind Regards,

Werner

Hi Werner

May I suggest that you re-read the article at:
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

Two of the rules described there are:

1. Don't use Format > Bullets and Numbering.

2. When you want to modify the numbering for, say, Heading 5, you MUST put
you cursor in a Heading 1 paragraph, and then choose Format > Style (or
Format > Styles and Formatting).

Hope this helps.
