Hi,

I need to use captions for some equations. The problem is that I'd like to
put them side to side with the equation like

a = x+1 (1.2)
| |
equation caption

The menu only has the options above or below.

Thank you

Alex

Hi Alex,

Create a two column single row table with the right column being just wide
enough to contain you caption and have the left column as wide as possible
so as to provide the necessary width for your equation.

To simplify this process, place a simple equation in the left cell and a
caption in the right cell and make an autotext entry of it. Then whenever
you need to insert an equation, insert the autotext entry and edit the
simple equation.

Please post any follow-up or new questions to the Newsgroups so that others
may benefit therefrom or contribute thereto.

Hope this helps,

Hi Alex,

Place the equation in the left cell of a two-column, one-row table. Insert a
caption (Word will insist on top or bottom of the table), then move it to
the right-hand cell.

A caption is a text string and a numeric field formatted in a particular way
using the 'caption' paragraph style. In order to use this style attached to
a paragraph, it must either be on a line of its own, or in a table cell, so
you could use a two column table, with column 1 for your equations, column 2
for the captions.

You can, however, overcome the problem of the paragraph style, by creating a
character style that matches the caption paragraph style, which by default
would be the default paragraph font + 10 point Bold and apply this to the
caption, thus you can have the caption on the same line of text as the
equation following a suitable tab. Save the tab and the formatted caption as
an autotext entry for easy editing.
