If I choose alpha numbering for a certain Heading style, the numbering
sequence produced is: a, b, c, ... z, aa, bb, cc, ...zz, etc.
I need the sequence to be: a, b, c, ...z, aa, ab, ac, ...az, ba, bb, bc,
.. bz, etc.
Can someone tell me of an elegant way to set up such a sequence using
numbering in Heading styles?

Marc,

Possibly not as elegant as one would wish, but...
Once you get to the heading where it begins to use 'aa', select that
instance of the heading, choose Format, Bullets and numbering...
In the dialog box select the heading format in current use and click
Customize.
In the Customize dialog click the More button.
Set 'Start from' to 'a' and type an 'a' before the default 'a' in the
'Number format' box.
Set 'Apply changes' to be 'This point forward'

The next 26 headings will be numbered aa, ab, ac, etc.... But then you'll
have to do it again or the next 26 after that.

Cheers
Graham
