TOC doesn't utilize TC fields

With Word 2002, I can't seem to get the TOC field to include TC field
entries along with my Heading 1 & 2 style text. TC field entries appear as
follows: { TC "TOC entry text" \l2 }. (I'm looking for the TC field text
entries to appear at the same TOC level as Heading 2 text).

The following is the procedure I've used. Any suggestions on what I might be
doing wrong are appreciated.

Cursor placed where I want a TOC entry to reference with a page number
Insert>Field
Categories = Index and Tables
Field Name = TC
Text entry = <TOC entry text>
Outline Level = checked, 2

Cursor placed where I want the TOC to appear in my doc.
Insert>Reference>Index and Tables>Table of Contents
Show page numbers = checked
Right align page numbers = checked
Tab leader = dots
Use hyperlinks... = unchecked
Formats = From template
Show levels = 2

TOC Options
Styles = checked
Heading 1 = TOC level 1
Heading 2 = TOC level 2
Outline level = unchecked
Table entry fields = checked

Additional Comments (not sure if these have any bearing):
On the Outlining toolbar, when I click on the Go to TOC button, if my cursor
isn't already in the TOC I get a message that the document doesn't contain a
TOC (which it clearly does). If the cursor is in the TOC and I click on the
Go to TOC button, the TOC is selected. Similar situation with the Update TOC
button on the Outlining toolbar: if the TOC isn't selected I get the same
message - if the TOC is selected I get the Update TOC dialog. I can
right-click anywhere in the TOC and select the Update Field command to get
the Update TOC dialog.

I think you may be confusing Word by checking both "Styles" and "Table entry
fields" (unless you want double entries), since labeling Heading 2 as Level
2 and using the TC fields as well will double-count Heading 2.

Susan, Thank you for your response. When I uncheck the Styles check box in
the TOC Contents Options dialog I end up with "Error! No table of contents
entries found" in place of a TOC. I don't think the problem is checking both
the Styles and Table entry field check boxes. I don't see how I'd end up
with double entries if my Heading 2 text is different from my TC field text.
The reason I need both Style and TC field TOC entries is that I some of my
TOC entries shouldn't appear in the document the way I want them to appear
in the TOC.

I was able to get the TC field to work properly in Word 97 on another
computer and for some reason that I can't explain it seems to be working
properly in my original Word 2002 document. I guess I shouldn't look a gift
horse in the mouth.

In that case, it sounds as if either the TOC *isn't* including TC fields or
those fields aren't properly constructed. The latter seems unlikely from
your description, so check the TOC field itself to see if it includes the \l
1-2 switch. It should also be showing \o "1-2" to include the Heading 1 and
Heading 2 styles.
