Hy,
I had the problem, that my heading's numbering got confused in the middle of
the document. None of the tips in this group (that I read) seemed to work.
What helped was a trick which may be helpfull for some other problems:

- I realised, that the confusion always started at one specific heading.
- But all formatting and renumbering and not-numbering and new-numbering and
save under... didn't help.
- I cut the whole page around the mentioned heading out of the document
- paste it in a new document
- and saved this new one as pure ASCII-Text (Dos-txt).
- Opening this text-file again and I got the problem:
- One Letter didn't show up as the letter it shoud be but as one of these
empty rectangles indicating non-ASCII-Code.
- I deleted this rectangle and replaced it with the proper letter.
- (guess what, this letter was just in the sentence bevore the heading where
the confusion started)
- Then reinsert the text in my Document
- Just need to reformat it with my styles and..
- The confusion was gone !

So I guess there there was some corrup code around one letter which confused
the numbering.

Oh, NICE piece of detective-work!

You have hit on something Margaret discovered a few weeks ago: Certain
characters from certain fonts do corrupt Word numbering. It seems to be a
Unicode translation error, and it's very difficult to find.

Well done.

There's an article in Microsoft's Knowledge Base about a similar problem:

>4 Q215343 - WD97: Outline Numbering Wrong When Headings Contain Special
Characters Like Trademark
> Excerpt from this page:Outline numbering is incorrect when headings in
your Word document contain special >characters like TM (trademark symbol).
For example, a numbered item in a multilevel list arbitrarily restarts at
>1:(size 7428 bytes, updated 12/14/1999 2:46:00 AM GMT)

Note that they're talking about a special symbol (a Unicode symbol, says the
full article) in the heading itself, rather than in the preceding para. But
perhaps it's the same problem. The article states that this is solved in
Word2000.
