Please do not get impatient with me, because I'm really determined to get
the numbering right, if it is possible anyway.
I DID read about inserting the page number (thru Insert --> Page numbers)
inside the three-columns section on page 3. However there was no positive
result, and I also checked (and changed it to continue numbering from the
section before) the page number formatting of the section below the
three-column one.
Just to be sure, I started all over again and tried all your suggestions
again (several times, even trying the steps in different order), and then I
tried all kinds of combinations.

Do you want me to explain, step by step, what I do? Maybe there is somewhere
an incorrect action I perform involuntary.
Hopefully you have some more suggestions which I can try to get my problem
solved.

Regards, Rickie

Okay, I'm assuming that you have (for the purposes of this explanation,
anyway) just three sections. Section 1 begins on page 1 and continues to the
section break on page 3. Section 2 is the three-column section. Section 3 is
the section that begins below the three-column section on page 3. This means
that you have three sections on page 3 alone. Section 2, the three-column
section, does not display a header or footer because it's not at the top or
bottom of a page, but it does have header and footer settings that are
inaccessible. You could change both section breaks to Next Page in order to
access these settings, but that would probably be more trouble than it's
worth.

To start at the beginning, with the insertion point in Section 3 (on page 4
to be on the safe side), View | Header and Footer, press the Format Page
Number button on the Header/Footer toolbar, and make sure that the page
numbering is set to "Continue from previous section." If it isn't, change
it. Any remaining problem with the page number will have to be (as we've
suspected from the outset) in Section 2.

But Section 2 doesn't have a header or footer, so you will have to access
the Format Page Number tab through Insert Page Numbers. With the insertion
point in Section 2, Insert | Page Numbers and press the Format... button.
Again, make the change to "Continue from previous section." Click OK to exit
the Page Number Format tab, then Close (not OK) to exit the Page Numbers
dialog.

If this doesn't work, then you've got something weird going on that I don't
understand.

It looks like that I have indeed something weird going on, because your
clear explanation could not solve my problem.
However I did learn some new things during this excercise.
I will try it out once more, together with a friend, so he can check me for
mistakes.
Thank you anyway for your help. Regularly I read your comments on other
people problems, which helped me solve quite a lot of problems.

Regards, Rickie

One other thought: If those are the only two section breaks in the document,
and all the formatting in all three sections is the same except for the
number of columns, you might try deleting both section breaks. Make sure
that the single remaining section is set to "Continue from previous section"
(which is the default for the first section of a document); then reinsert
the section breaks (the easy way to do this is just to select the text you
want in three columns and drag to select three columns on the flyout from
the Columns button on the toolbar; Word will take care of inserting the
section breaks).

Suzanne,
Your last thought was the solution.
It works fine now.
Thank you.
