I am working with a document that has been reused over many years, and the
outline formatting has been messed up. Many places people have customized
the formatting or selected a different standard format for individual
titles. I have tried to individually reset the outline to a standard
format, but when I do, it changes formatting of titles elsewhere. Is there
a way to globally change the outline formatting to use one of the defaults?
I can't just do a Control+A because it tries to outline the text and I only
want it to reset the titles.

If numbering is attached to styles, you can modify the numbering via the
Modify Style dialog box for the top level style (usually Heading 1 if this
is heading numbering). In the dialog box, click Format, Numbering; this
displays the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box, where you can make
the desired changes (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for more
information).

Thank you for the link. From reading it and knowing that the header
formatting inconsistencies are pervasive throughout the document, it appears
that I will have to update them one by one to clean up the mess. I have
even found that when I check them and they have the correct style shown in
the dialog, hitting ok can still update the style for indents. I imagine
this will take the better part of the afternoon, but hopefully after that it
will be set.

It may be time-consuming, especially if you have many outline lists.
However, for a given outline list, you get access to all aspects of
numbering, for all levels, in the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog
box, as explained in the article.
